The Dark Knight isn't the only new movie to set a record this past weekend.
Opening on 2,976 screens, Mamma Mia! brought in $27,751,240 which barely bests the previous record holder, 2007's Hairspray, which brought in $27,476,745 during its opening frame.
Estimates had placed Mamma Mia! ahead of Hairspray by less than $200,000. Hairspray was able to gross $118.8 million during its domestic theatrical run and it crossed the $200 million mark worldwide.
