Marvel unveiled the first teaser trailer for Iron Man 3 on Tuesday and it spread like wildfire across Twitter. The result was a massive one-day total of 105,970 tweets for the May 3, 2013 release. With an 11:1 positive-to-negative reaction ratio, fans are clearly excited about what they're seeing so far. The film kicks off "Phase 2" of Marvel's Cinematic Universe following the extraordinary success of this year's Marvel's The Avengers.
The one-day tweet total stands as one of the best we've seen in awhile. In fact, it was almost identical to the huge activity of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey when its first teaser debuted on December 21, 2011. Fans ate up their long-awaited first look at Peter Jackson's return to Middle-earth by generating 103,225 tweets that day. The positive-to-negative ratio was 11:1 for it as well.
By comparison, when the first teaser trailer for Marvel's The Avengers debuted on October 11, 2011, the result was 54,143 tweets generating a 12:1 positive ratio. Still a great result under any circumstances, and it just goes to show that fans are as pleased with Marvel's direction now as they were then (if not more so).
The Iron Man 3 teaser activity also out-performed that of The Dark Knight Rises (41,629 tweets and a 14:1 positive ratio) when its teaser debuted online back on August 1, 2011 (that teaser, however, had been playing in theaters for two weeks already).
The first non-teaser trailer for The Hunger Games pulled 43,423 tweets on November 14, 2011 and boasted a strong 12:1 positive ratio at the time.
While Twitter data isn't available for the date of Iron Man 2's teaser debut back in 2009, even its second trailer pulled a mere 10,406 tweets on March 7, 2010. The buzz on that one was considerably less, though, with a noticeably lower 5:1 positive ratio. Granted, the Twitter-verse has continued to expand exponentially in the years since, but the response definitely indicated some apprehension among fans with that film. Iron Man 3 appears to be going in a decidedly different direction, though.
