For those of you who aren't scholars of obscure sadistic cultural arcana, the Grand Guignol was a theater company that, for decades (beginning in the 1890s) offered up the stage equivalent of what in the 60s came to be called Gore Films, which is to say little playlets with lurid plots and highly realistic special effects featuring people being dismembered in all sorts of interesting ways.
Read moreI made to sure check out Clint Eastwood's masterful new film Changeling with a relatively packed house at my local theatre this weekend. I would say that the general audience reaction was very strong and that this is a film that will go pretty far on positive word of mouth. In addition to gauging the reaction to Changeling, it was interesting to see the way that the audience reacted to the trailer for Eastwood's other new release this fall, Gran Torino. While Changeling earns a respectful response from its viewers, it looks like Torino is going to earn a more tangible level of excitement.
