For those of you who aren't scholars of obscure sadistic cultural arcana, the Grand Guignol was a theater company that, for decades (beginning in the 1890s) offered up the stage equivalent of what in the 60s came to be called Gore Films, which is to say little playlets with lurid plots and highly realistic special effects featuring people being dismembered in all sorts of interesting ways.

I would say that the general audience reaction was very strong and that this is a film that will go pretty far on positive word of mouth. In addition to gauging the reaction to Changeling, it was interesting to see the way that the audience reacted to the trailer for Eastwood's other new release this fall, Gran Torino. While Changeling earns a respectful response from its viewers, it looks like Torino is going to earn a more tangible level of excitement.

Here are statistics from those three locations: U.K.'s Opening Numbers: The weekend estimate now sits at 15.4 million pounds, which is the biggest standard 3-day opening of all time, passing Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire 's 14.934 million. This is 35% bigger than the 11.427 million pounds launch of Casino Royale. Quantum captured a massive 70% of the U.K. box office this weekend.
