'Dark Knight' Crosses $300 Million Mark

According to weekend estimates, The Dark Knight has grossed another $75.6 million and now has a total haul of $314 million. By crossing the $300 million milestone in only 10 days, Knight becomes the fastest movie of all-time to do so. The previous record holder was 2006's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, which did it in 16 days. Once again, here is the list of records that The Dark Knight has claimed: #1 - Biggest seven-day gross with $238.6 million (which beat 2006's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, which had grossed $196 million during the same time frame).

Will 'Mummy 3' Be Hurt By A New Evelyn?

By Phil Contrino Casual fans of The Mummy franchise may be in for a surprise when they catch the latest installment of the franchise on August 1st. While Stephen Sommers, the man behind both The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, is serving only as a producer and has been replaced in the director's chair by Rob Cohen ( The Fast and the Furious, Stealth ), there is going to be another member of the original creative team whose absence will be more noticeable.

We were able to chat with Larry Collins, Vice President, Film for Carmike Cinemas about life in the exhibition industry and his own personal taste in movies. Number of years he has been in the exhibition industry: 33 How did you get started? "My first job in the industry was in high school. I had a summer job as an usher in Downtown Philadelphia and I saw Irma la Douce 47 times and I laughed every time. I just got fascinated with movies ... My stepfather owned some theatres in York, PA and as I got a little older I asked him some questions about the industry: How do the movies get there?, Who buys them?, Who sells them?

By Phil Contrino When Semi-Pro opened this past February, it was clear right from the opening weekend that Will Ferrell was far from a sure thing. The film, which marked what seemed to be Ferrell's 1,757th entry into the sports-spoof genre, was able to gross only $33.47 million domestically. Considering that Ferrell's star turn in the less commercially-accessible Stranger Than Fiction was able to bring in $40.4 million, Semi-Pro was viewed as a disappointment.

'Mamma Mia!' Sets Record

The Dark Knight isn't the only new movie to set a record this past weekend. Opening on 2,976 screens, Mamma Mia! brought in $27,751,240 which barely bests the previous record holder, 2007's Hairspray, which brought in $27,476,745 during its opening frame. Estimates had placed Mamma Mia! ahead of Hairspray by less than $200,000. Hairspray was able to gross $118.8 million during its domestic theatrical run and it crossed the $200 million mark worldwide.

'Knight' Boosts Online Ticket Sales

UPDATED : Tuesday, July 22nd. The Dark Knight has done a lot to help boost the popularity of online ticket purchasing. On MovieTickets.com, the film sold over 1 million tickets from Thursday to Sunday and and it set four all-time records between Friday and Sunday, including single-day and opening-weekend records site-wide and for a single film. The highly successful flick is already the site's No. 4 ticket seller of all-time despite being so new to theaters.

By Chad Greene Tears streaming down his face, U.S. Army Sgt. Lincoln Osiris holds Sgt. Four Leaf Tayback’s forearms up in the air so that his fallen friend will not bleed to death out of the charred stumps that used to be his hands. With what seem destined to be his last breaths, Four Leaf gasps, “When we get back to the world … I’m finally going to teach you … how to juggle.” Sure, it’s a laugh line loaded with irony, but when it’s coming out of the mouth of the actor playing Four Leaf—or, more accurately, the actor playing the actor who’s playing him—there is also a ring of truth to it.
