BOX OFFICE ACTUALS: 'Oz' is Powerful in Brazil
on March 12, 2013
Oz: The Great and Powerful easily dominated the Brazilian box office this week, facing only the fading success of A Good Day to Die Hard, and two other non-threatening debuts: the Danish romantic comedy Love is All You Need (which ranked 6th), and the indie black comedy Stand Up Guys with Christopher Walken (which ranked 10th). With a $3.7 million weekend -- nearly four times higher than its toughest competition -- Oz barely had to cast a spell to control the box office. But that doesn't mean Disney is happy. Oz's debut was barely half of Alice in Wonderland's $6 million opening weekend in 2010, which means it won't pull in anywhere close to Alice's $28.3 million total haul.
