BRAZIL: 'Percy Jackson' Leads a Sequel-Heavy Weekend

pj-sea-of-monsters01.jpgPercy Jackson: Sea of Monsters outperformed the debut of the original in Brazil, opening the door to a successful run with a $3.7 million bow. The original Percy Jackson film opened to $2.2 million in 2010 en route to an $8.6 million total.

The Percy Jackson sequel dethroned The Smurfs 2 from the top position. The animated sequel was coming off of two consecutive weekends at the top of the box office and finished its third frame in second place with $1.5 million. The Smurfs 2 has grossed a total of $11.5 million in Brazil, a far cry from the original film's $32.9 million total.

Grown Ups 2 opened in third place with $1.4 million. The ensemble comedy outgrossed the original's opening weekend of $1.2 million. The first Grown Ups had a $7.6 million run in 2010.

Pacific Rim was upset in last weekend's debut by The Smurfs 2 but held well in its second frame, grossing $1.1 million to raise its cue to $4.4 million. The weekend's last competitive hold came for The Wolverine, which has already collected $19.3 million after four weeks in release.
