BRAZIL: 'Meu Passado Me Condena,' Domestic RomCom, Leads the Weekend on October 30, 2013
Romantic comedy Meu Passado Me Condena opened in first place in Brazil over the weekend. The film stars Fabio Porchat and Mia Mello as newlyweds who find themselves sharing a Honeymoon cruise with their exes…who have also gotten married to each other and, apparently, use the same travel agent. The high-concept comedy proved to be a big hit with Brazilian audiences, earning $2.3 million from 411 screens to dethrone Gravity as the country’s top film. Meu Passado Me Condena also led the per-screen average category with $5,698.
Gravity settled for second place in its third frame in Brazil. The sci-fi film posted a $1.1 million hold from 319 screens, a 26% drop from the previous weekend. Gravity has grossed a total of $6 million during its Brazilian run. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 has proved to be resilient in Brazil, finishing its fourth frame in third place with an $844K outing from a market-leading 590 screens. The animated sequel has grossed a total of $11.9 million in Brazil.
Brazil was the only major overseas territory where Ridley Scott’s The Counselor shared a day-and-date premiere with North America. The Counselor has suffered nearly unanimous derision from critics and stumbled out of the gate at the North American box office. A limited release in 158 screens put the The Counselor in fourth place with a $534K bow. The $3,384 per-screen average gives it a competition edge heading to its second weekend, where The Counselor will need to expand in order to gain momentum.

BRAZIL: 'Gravity' Rises to #1 on October 23, 2013
Gravity dethroned Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 for the top spot at the Brazilian box office. The sci-fi film took a narrow lead from the weekend despite playing in less than half the screens showing the animated sequel. The $1.43 million take for Gravity propelled the film to a $4.1 million cume in its second frame. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 finished the weekend with a $1.4 million tally from 639 screens, bringing its Brazilian total to $9.2 million.
Prisoners premiered in third place, finishing the weekend with an $810K gross from 218 screens. Prisoners was the weekend’s top new release after fellow openers Serra Pelada and Diana struggled to make an impact. Diana opened in 87 screens for a $165k tally at the bottom of the table; the Lady Di biopic only played in 87 screens and collected a middling $1,901 per-screen average.
Escape Plan continues to prove the Brazilian audience’s waning interest in aging action stars. The Stallone/Schwarzenegger vehicle fell to the bottom half of the table with a $334K gross in its second weekend. Escape Plan has grossed a total of $1.3 million in Brazil and will hope to end its run in the territory above the $2 million mark. Riddick has shared similar box office struggles, occupying the eighth position in this weekend’s chart with a $285K hold. Riddick has grossed a total of $1.1 million in Brazil.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 posted a spectacular hold in its second weekend, dropping a mere 6% for a $2.9 million take from a market-leading 660 screens. The animated sequel reached a $7.3 million cume in Brazil, practically equaling the $7.54 million lifetime gross of the original. The sci-fi film opened to a $1.6 million bow. Gravity’s muscle in the Brazilian box office was evident with a dominant $7,623 per-screen average.

Dragonball Z: Kami to Kami saw a $765K debut from 287 screens, while Escape Plan and Riddick both flopped in limited release in the $500K range. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 beat the forecast in its opening weekend, shattering the $1.3 million earned by the original's debut with a $3.1 million bow. Cloudy 2's $4,763 per-screen average was the market-leader by a wide margin.
Elysium posted a strong hold in its third frame, finishing the weekend in second place with a $1.26 million take. The sci-fi flick has maintained a strong per-screen average with a $3,364 tally, representing a 24% drop in both weekend box office and PSA from the previous frame.
