CHINA: 'Gravity' Stays Strong, Crosses $50M
on December 03, 2013
Gravity is the #1 film in China for a second consecutive week. The sci-fi film added $22.47 million in its second frame, reaching a $58.77 million cume in the market. Gravity’s weekly total nearly matches the 11-day cume of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The sequel starring Jennifer Lawrence has struggled on the heels of Gravity, reporting a $24.18 million cume. An $11.1 million week wasn’t enough for Catching Fire to keep the #2 spot in the country. The White Storm washed out Catching Fire with a $12.94 million weekend bow, relegating the Hunger Games sequel to third place and putting the breaks on a blockbuster run in China for the young adult adaptation. Catching Fire is out of contention to match Gravity's $50M-plus run, looking instead to emulate the $40.76 million run of Escape Plan in China.
Epic had a moderate $3.65 million weekend debut in the market. The animated film has grossed $158.4 million overseas and $265.7 million worldwide. Thor: The Dark World reached a $55 million cume in China, the top overseas market for the superhero sequel. The latest Thor film broke the $400 million mark in the overseas box office over the weekend, with China contributing an additional $2.13 million from its fourth week in release. Red 2 is closing out its run in China under the $10 million mark. The action sequel took $460K in its third week to reach an $8.98 million total.
