Captain America: The Winter Soldier led the Chinese box office once again with an $18 million gross in its second full week of release. The superhero sequel is on the verge of hitting the $100 million mark in China with a $98.27 million cume.
Rio 2 posted a strong $12 million take in its first full week in the market. The animated film has grossed $25 million after ten days of release in China.
Transcendence took a commanding $10.65 million opening weekend to finish third in the weekly box office chart. The film benefitted from a strong marketing push that brought star Johnny Depp to China for the first time. China is the only market where Transcendence is screening in 3D.

The marketing around Transcendence bet big on China ahead of the film’s day-and-date release in the market. Johnny Depp traveled to the country for the first time on a marketing tour that promoted the film’s only 3D release in the world. Previously, RoboCop had found success in the market by releasing a 3D version of the film exclusively to Chinese audiences.
The gamble paid off after Transcendence reached an $11.4 million debut in China from 6,000 screens (180 IMAX). The film fared significantly worse in other markets, however, as the Johnny Depp vehicle only managed to gross $17.4 million from its first 27 overseas markets. Transcendence struggled out of the gate in North America as well, where its opening weekend took less money than its Chinese debut with an $11.1 million bow.
Transcendence is off to a shaky start globally, with a $28.5 million worldwide cume. The film will hope to improve its box office performance with an expansion to bigger markets starting next weekend, including Germany, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
Captain America: The Winter Solider hit the $80 million mark after completing its first full week at the Chinese box office. The superhero sequel took a whopping $41.44 million throughout the week.
Rio 2 took a strong $12.96 million opening weekend to finish in second place.
Mr. Peabody & Sherman continues to do well in China. The film should clear the $20 million mark by the end of the current week.
The Legend of Hercules took a mid-table $2.37 million debut.
Need for Speed is finally slowing down its strong run. The film has grossed a total of $66.24 million in China, its top global market including North America.
Chinese film Black Coal, Thin Ice bridged the art house and commercial gap in its home country. The film won the top honor at this year's Berlin Film Festival and has grossed a total of $16.46 million in China.
