Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit was the top live action film in release after taking a $9.55 million opening weekend. Jack Ryan's 64,892 showings brought in 1,761,180 admissions over the weekend.

Ender's Game slid down to the mid-table spots with a $6.44 million hold in its second week. Ender has grossed a total of $17.47 million in China, not exactly a disappointment but far from the numbers it needed to change its box office woes around the world.

CHINA: 'Despicable Me 2' Takes #1 with Strong Opening Numbers on January 14, 2014

despicable_me_2_china.jpgA $15.37 million debut launched Despicable Me 2 to the top of the box office chart in China. It took eight months for the film to premiere in the world's second biggest box office market, and it did so without the benefit of having its predecessor, Despicable Me, receive a theatrical release in the country.

Universal had originally estimated a $13.8 opening for Despicable Me 2. The number was revised to $14.4 million by Monday before data from consulting firm Entgroup confirmed a $15.37 million. This makes Despicable Me 2 the third biggest animated opener of all time in China behind Ice Age: Continental Drift ($19.4M) and Kung Fu Panda ($16.2M).

Ender's Game finished its first week in release with a $10.96 million bow. The Chinese premiere pushed the film's box office past the $100 million global mark; an important milestone for a film that was never able to take off in North America, ending its theatrical run in its home market with $61.7 million.

Police Story 2013 slipped down to third place after two consecutive weeks on top of the chart. The Jackie Chan film added $8 million to its tally in order to reach an $81.17 million total. Personal Tailor took $5.25 million from its fourth frame to bring its Chinese cume up to $112.54 million.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones finished its second week in the bottom half of the table with a $1.6 million hold. The film has grossed a total of $4.26 million in China.

'Despicable Me 2' Posts $14.4M Debut in China on January 13, 2014

dm2stills.JPGDespicable Me 2 opened in China eight months after its North American premiere to a strong $14.4 million debut from 4,500 theaters. The final tally is above Universal's original $13.8 million estimate for the animated sequel. The strong opening weekend is even more notable since the original Despicable Me never received a theatrical release in the country.

The Minions claimed the biggest opening weekend for an animated film in China since ice Age: Continental Drift in 2012. In fact, Despicable Me 2 posted the third highest opening for an industry animated release behind Ice Age: Continental Drift ($19.4M) and Kung Fu Panda ($16.2M).

Despicable Me 2 has now passed Finding Nemo ($555.9M) and The Lion King ($564.7M) to become the fourth highest grossing animated film of all time overseas. Despicable Me 2 is currently #3 among highest grossing animated releases worldwide.
