BOX OFFICE: 'Cloud Atlas' Off To Healthy Start; 'Skyfall' Closes In On $50 Million on February 01, 2013

cloudatlaschinaposter.jpgSources tell Boxoffice that Cloud Atlas made $2.6 million (RMB 16 million) on its first day of release in China. That's a promising start for the sci-fi/fantasy flick. Cloud Atlas needs to grab all it can from China considering that its global total before releasing in the Middle Kingdom was an underwhelming $80.5 million. Early buzz on Sina Weibo, a popular Chinese social media site, indicates that moviegoers are not reacting negatively to the fact that nearly 40 minutes of footage was reportedly cut from Cloud Atlas

Elsewhere at the Chinese box office, Skyfall is up to $44.7 million as of Thursday. 

BOX OFFICE: 'Skyfall' Passes $40 Million on January 30, 2013

Sources tell Boxoffice that Skyfall's total in China after Tuesday is $40.6 million (RMB 252.7 million). Official numbers will be released next Tuesday. 

'Les Misérables', 'A Good Day To Die Hard' and 'Oz: The Great and Powerful' Headed To China on January 30, 2013

lesmis.pngHollywood is ready to start rolling out more blockbusters in China.

Warner Bros. has already confirmed that The Hobbit will open on February 22. Now sources tell Boxoffice that three other films are set to open in the Middle Kingdom: Les Misérables on 2/28 with an IMAX release being planned by Wanda; A Good Day to Die Hard on 3/16 and Oz: The Great and Powerful also on 3/16. Both A Good Day to Die Hard and Oz will play on IMAX screens. We are waiting for official confirmation. 

Les Mis has tallied a solid $37 million haul in South Korea and nearly $5 million in Hong Kong, so it should do well in China. As of Tuesday, the musical's global haul is $314.5 million. 

A Good Day to Die Hard could follow in the footsteps of The Expendables 2, a $53.1 million hit in China. Or it could end up closer to the $20.2 million haul of Looper

As for Oz: The Great and Powerful, the benchmark will be the $34.6 million haul of Alice in Wonderland in 2010. Oz star James Franco isn't as big of a global draw as Alice star Johnny Depp, but the Chinese box office has grown so much since Alice opened--an 87% jump from 2010 to 2012--that Oz could still end up passing Tim Burton's fantasy flick. 

BOX OFFICE: 'Skyfall' Leads; 'Lost in Thailand' Still Trails 'Avatar'; 'Gone' Flops on January 29, 2013

Entgroup reports that as of January 27, Skyfall is up to $34.5 million in China. The spy film was able to overshadow The Mythical Ark: Adventures in Love and Happiness, a Chinese animated flick that opened in second with $9.8 million from January 21-27.

Lost in Thailand is running out of steam even though it's so close to topping Avatar's $203. 8 million record-setting haul in China. The comedy grabbed $1.4 million this past week, pushing its total to $197.4 million. 

Elsewhere in the top 10, Gone, an American thriller starring Amanda Seyfried, managed only $630K in three days. Gone grossed only $11.7 million in North America last February. 

The past week's box office total was $387.6 million, a 34% increase over the previous week and an 18% increase over the same week last year.
