Rise of the Planet of the Apes is off to an incredible start. The franchise reboot managed a solid $19.75 million on Friday, which is enough to put it on pace for debut north of $50 million. Word-of-mouth is clearly very strong on the heels of a warm critical reception. More than 28,000 Flixster users have combined to give Apes a very promising 87% approval rating.
The streak of successful R-rated comedies has come to a grinding halt with The Change-Up. The Universal release was able to manage only $4.7 million on Friday, which marks a decidedly weak start. Word-of-mouth is not off to a good start with more than 16,000 Flixster users combining to give the comedy a mediocre 63% approval rating.
Even though it lost the #1 spot to Cowboys & Aliens last weekend, The Smurfs is holding up much better. C&A suffered a terrible sophomore frame drop. Smurfs is still not holding up all that well when compared to family-skewing flicks.
