Paramount's Paranormal Activity 3 grossed $2.14 million on Wednesday to remain at the top of the daily box office. In the process the low-budget blockbuster horror sequel cleared the $60 million mark. However, Paranormal Activity 3 did fall 25 percent from Tuesday, which was a sharper decline than the 15.5 percent last year's Paranormal Activity 2 fell on its first Wednesday. With that said, with $60.46 million in just six days of release, Paranormal Activity 3 is still running an impressive 28 percent ahead of the pace of Paranormal Activity 2.
Fellow Paramount release Footloose was up one spot from Tuesday to claim second place on Wednesday with $0.63 million. The dance film remake fell 18 percent from Tuesday and 39 percent from last Wednesday. Footloose has grossed $32.35 million through 13 days of release thanks in part to solid holding power for its genre. However, the competition for the film's target audience will get much tougher this weekend with the release of both Paramount's Puss in Boots and Fox's In Time on Friday.
After holding up reasonably well on Monday and Tuesday, Summit's The Three Musketeers was down a very sharp 31 percent on Wednesday. The pricey 3D action-adventure film grossed $0.58 million for the day, which was good enough for third. The Three Musketeers has grossed a lackluster $10.76 million through six days of release and is highly likely to disappear from domestic theatres before long.
Real Steel held steady in fourth place with $0.55 million. The Disney released DreamWorks film starring Hugh Jackman was down 18 percent from Tuesday and down 41 percent from last Wednesday. Real Steel has grossed $68.56 million in 20 days, but like Footloose, should also take a significant hit from this weekend's new releases (as well as from Halloween falling on a Monday).
Sony's The Ides of March rounded out the day's top five with $0.42 million. The George Clooney directed awards season hopeful fell 14 percent from Tuesday and a healthy 33 percent from last Wednesday. The Ides of March surpassed the $30 million mark yesterday and has now grossed $30.38 million through 20 days of release.
