Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted grossed $6.33 million on Monday to lead the daily box office for a third consecutive day. The 3D computer animated sequel from Paramount and DreamWorks Animation fell 63 percent from Sunday. Madagascar 3 has grossed a better than expected $66.65 million through four days of release. That places the film just 2 percent behind the $68.25 million four-day start of 2008's Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and 9 percent behind the $73.09 million four-day start of last year's Cars 2.
Fox's Prometheus claimed second place with $5.20 million. The Ridley Scott directed 3D Alien spin-off fell 62 percent from Sunday. With a solid four-day start of $56.25 million, Prometheus continues to run in line with pre-release expectations. Prometheus is currently running 33 percent stronger than the $42.22 million four-day start of 2004's Alien vs. Predator and 7 percent softer than the $60.55 million four-day start of last year's X-Men: First Class. Prometheus could take a hit today from Game 1 of the NBA Finals.
Snow White and the Huntsman placed in third with $2.68 million. In the process, Universal's big-budget adaptation surpassed the $100 million domestic mark yesterday. It took Snow White and the Huntsman eleven days to reach the milestone. Snow White and the Huntsman has grossed $101.22 million to date. The film fell 60 percent from Sunday and 50 percent from last Monday.
Sony's Men in Black 3 grossed $1.64 million to take fourth place. The expensive sequel starring Will Smith was down 58 percent from Sunday and down 40 percent from last Monday. Men in Black 3 has grossed $137.54 million in 18 days, placing it 7 percent ahead of the pace of 2009's Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.
Marvel's The Avengers rounded out Monday's top five with $1.39 million. Disney's blockbuster superhero film fell 59 percent from Sunday and 32 percent from last Monday. The Avengers has grossed a mighty $573.69 million in 39 days, leaving it $26.31 million away from reaching the $600 million domestic milestone.
