The Weinstein Company's Django Unchained grossed $2.43 million on Tuesday to remain in first place at the daily box office. The Quentin Tarantino directed western has now led the daily box office for four consecutive days (and six of the past seven). Django Unchained was up a strong 30 percent over Monday, which was among the day's better daily holds for wide releases. Django Unchained has grossed an impressive $110.58 million through 15 days of release. That places the film 18 percent ahead of the $93.40 million 15-day gross of 2010's True Grit.
Les Misérables was up 29 percent and one spot over Monday to place in second with $1.63 million. Universal's modestly budgeted musical outpaced The Hobbit by $54,964 for the day and is likely to remain ahead of The Hobbit in the coming days thanks in part to Academy Award nominations being announced on Thursday. Les Misérables has grossed a healthy $106.39 million in 15 days of domestic release.
Warner's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey placed in third with $1.57 million. The Peter Jackson directed fantasy blockbuster was up 20 percent over Monday, which represented a respectable daily hold given that other films with family appeal didn't hold up all that well on Tuesday. The 26-day domestic total for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey stands at $266.72 million.
Texas Chainsaw 3D held steady in fourth place with $1.17 million. The 3D horror film was up a modest 2 percent over Monday, which represented one of the day's poorer daily holds among wide releases. Texas Chainsaw 3D has grossed a stronger than expected $24.06 million in five days, but continues to display early signs of being very front-loaded. The film is currently running 14 percent ahead of the pace of 2006's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning.
Sony's Zero Dark Thirty continued to impress in platform release on Tuesday with $280,759 from 60 locations. That gave the Kathryn Bigelow directed awards season hopeful a daily per-location average of $4,679. Zero Dark Thirty has grossed $4.93 million to date and is in very good shape to have a strong performance when it expands into wide release this weekend.
