Sony reports The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones debuted to a weak $3.01 million on Wednesday. The film continues the trend of young adult adaptation misfires, a trend made prominent this year with the earlier disappointments of Beautiful Creatures and The Host. By comparison, they opened to $2.54 million and $5.34 million, respectively (both on Fridays). If City of Bones has any possible bright spot for the weekend, it could be that many theaters didn't book Tuesday night screenings and some schools are already back in session. Still, expect a disappointing weekend ahead.

Lee Daniels' The Butler eased into second place yesterday with another $2.415 million added to its tally. The well-received drama has bagged $32.8 million since debuting last Friday, putting it nearly 6 percent behind 42 and 17.6 percent behind The Help (a Wednesday opener) at the same respective points. BoxOffice projects The Butler will repeat in first place for its second weekend ahead.

Warner Bros.' We're the Millers eased 39.1 percent from Wednesday of last week to $1.93 million yesterday. The word-of-mouth hit comedy continues to perform well in the late summer market as it increased its total to $76.3 million. Millers is currently performing 7.5 percent ahead of the pace of Tropic Thunder and should repeat a second place finish again this weekend.

Sony's Elysium added $1.27 million yesterday, off 53.2 percent from the same day last week. Neill Blomkamp's sci-fi actioner has grossed $60.69 million since opening thirteen days ago--22.7 percent less than District 9 at the same point.

Planes rounded out the top five on Wednesday with $1.22 million. Disney's spin-off toon is running 60.7 percent ahead of last year's ParaNorman, having pulled $49.6 million total thus far.

Meanwhile, Kick-Ass 2 fell out of the top five yesterday thanks to the market's new opener. The sequel added $0.983 million to its disappointing opening week, making for a total of just $17.26 million in six days. The original Kick-Ass had tallied $24.18 million by the same point.
