Insidious Chapter 2 took in $1.77 million on Monday to remain in first place at the daily box office. The low-budget horror film from FilmDistrict was down a significant 73 percent from Sunday. Given its appeal with teens, the PG-13 rated film is likely to hold up softer on weekdays than an R rated horror film typically would.  In the bigger picture, Insidious Chapter 2 has already grossed $42.04 million through just four days of release. That places the film 2.5 percent behind the $43.11 million four-day start of 2010's Paranormal Activity 2 and a very impressive 194 percent ahead of the $14.31 million four-day take of 2011's Insidious.

Relativity's The Family placed in second with $1.15 million. The Luc Besson directed film starring Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer was down 65 percent from Sunday, which was in line with the type of daily declines on Monday experienced by most wide releases aimed at adult moviegoers. The Family has grossed a respectable $15.19 million in its first four days of release. That places the film 13 percent behind the $17.51 million four-day take of 2008's Righteous Kill and 50 percent ahead of the $10.13 million four-day start of 2011's Killer Elite.

Universal's Riddick placed in third with $0.623 million. The third installment of the Vin Diesel led sci-fi franchise fell 67 percent from Sunday and 55 percent from last Monday. Riddick has grossed $31.73 million in eleven days. That is a bit below expectations and 27 percent behind the $43.67 million eleven-day take of 2004's The Chronicles of Riddick.

Lee Daniels' The Butler and We're the Millers took fourth and fifth place respectively on Monday with $0.502 million and $0.461 million. The Weinstein Company's The Butler was down 65 percent from Sunday and 24 percent from last Monday, while Warner's We're the Millers was down 64 percent from Sunday and 20 percent from last Monday. Respective total grosses for the late-summer hits stand at $132.05 million for We're the Millers in 41 days and at $100.51 million for The Butler in 32 days.
