Paramount's Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa led the way on Halloween with $1.78 million. The modestly budgeted Jackass spin-off starring Johnny Knoxville was down 12 percent from Wednesday. Bad Grandpa experienced the day's poorest daily hold among wide releases, as it was clearly affected by Halloween in a more negative way than other films were. Bad Grandpa topped the $40 million mark yesterday and placed in first for the week with a seven-day start of $41.56 million. Bad Grandpa is currently running 11 percent ahead of the $37.47 million seven-day take of 2006's Jackass Number Two and 37 percent behind the $65.55 million seven-day start of 2010's Jackass 3D.

Warner's Gravity held steady in second with $1.64 million. Thanks to a healthy 15 percent daily increase on Halloween, Gravity trailed Bad Grandpa by a relatively small $137,858 for the day. Gravity placed in second for the week with $26.55 million. That was down 34 percent from the previous week and brings the film's four-week total to a massive $206.07 million. With Gravity losing IMAX screens to Ender's Game today, the film is set to take a hit this weekend.

Speaking of Ender's Game, the Sci-Fi film from Lionsgate was off to a good late night start on Thursday with an estimated $1.4 million, which will be counted towards Friday's opening day gross. That was on par with the recent $1.4 million late night start of Gravity and was stronger than $1.10 million late night start of Oblivion earlier this year. However, it should be noted that Ender's Game did have a bit of an advantage from opening at 8 p.m. on Thursday and may have also received a bit of Halloween boost (especially since it was a weekday). Regardless, Ender's Game should have no problem leading the box office this weekend given the strength of its late night start.  Check back throughout the weekend for box office updates on the progress of Ender's Game and the rest of this weekend's line-up.

Turning back to Thursday's rankings, Sony's Captain Phillips grossed $1.18 million to remain in third. Captain Phillips was up a strong 34 percent over Wednesday, as the film experienced a surprisingly strong Halloween bump for a non-horror film aimed at adults. Captain Phillips placed in third for the week with $15.78 million. That was down just 29 percent from the previous frame and brings the film's three-week total to a stronger than expected $74.05 million.

Fellow Sony release Carrie placed in fourth with $0.90 million. While Carrie hasn't appeared to have been helped out much by the lead-up to Halloween, the R-rated horror film clearly was helped out on Halloween as it increased 97 percent over Wednesday. Carrie placed in fifth for the week with $8.45 million, which was down 58 percent from the film's opening week performance and brings the film's two-week total to a softer than expected $28.57 million.
