Paramount's G.I. Joe: Retaliation posted a solid increase of 47.5 percent from Thursday to $15.5 million on Friday. Although online reactions have been decidedly mixed, the film's "A-" CinemaScore and seemingly significant appeal to families and action fans will result in a projected $38 million three-day haul. Still, the sequel's projected four-day cume of $48.5 million represents a noticeable audience decline from The Rise of Cobra's $54.7 million (carrying no 3D or IMAX price advantage) three-day opening in 2009.

Tyler Perry's Temptation got away with $9.4 million for its opening day. On track for a $22 million weekend, the film is off to a stronger start than recent non-Madea flicks from Perry.

The first DreamWorks Animation computer animated film to be distributed by Fox increased a healthy 20 percent over Monday. In comparison, 2011's Rio increased 28 percent on its first Tuesday to gross $4.18 million, while 2010's How to Train Your Dragon was unchanged on its first Tuesday to take in $4.80 million. The Croods passed the $50 million mark yesterday and has now grossed $52.87 million in five days. That is towards the higher end of expectations and places the film 13 percent ahead of the $46.68 million five-day start of Rio and 1 percent behind the $53.35 million five-day take of How to Train Your Dragon.

'The Croods' Leads Monday with $4.2 Million

The Croods took in $4.20 million on Monday to remain in first place at the daily box office. The first DreamWorks Animation computer animated film to be distributed by Fox fell 68 percent from Sunday. That represented the day's poorest daily hold among wide releases, as daily holds in general were helped on Monday from the approaching Easter holiday. In comparison, 2011's Rio fell 71 percent on its first Monday to gross $3.27 million, while 2010's How to Train Your Dragon fell 66 percent to gross $4.81 million on its first Monday. The Croods has grossed $47.84 million in four days. That is towards the higher end of expectations and places the film 13 percent ahead of the $42.50 million four-day start of Rio and 1.5 percent behind the $48.
