Friday Afternoon Update (1:10 p.m PT): It was a strong New Year's Eve at the box office as Avatar set a new daily record for New Year's Eve with an estimated take of $14.93 million. That topped the previous New Year's Eve record of $12.14 million held by 2004's Meet the Fockers. Meanwhile, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel and Sherlock Holmes registered the fifth and sixth largest New Year's Eve grosses on record. The Squeakquel grossed an estimated $8.75 million, while Sherlock Holmes followed closely behind with an estimated $8.72 million.

Respective totals for Avatar, The Squeakquel and Sherlock Holmes stand at $283.81 million, $120.75 million and $102.29 million through Thursday.

Other estimated grosses for New Year's Eve include $3.44 million for The Blind Side, $2.84 million for Up in the Air and $2.63 million for The Princess and the Frog.

Wednesday Afternoon Update (4:08 p.m. PT): This weekend, the top 10 will be dominated by the same films that helped achieve a record-breaking haul during the holiday frame. No new titles are opening in wide release.

"It won't be a quiet weekend at the box office, that's for sure, but it will be a familiar one," says John Singh, a spokesperson for Flixster.

Avatar has received the most positive reviews of any 2009 release on Flixster, and it's still seeing 2.5 times as much activity as any other film. Avatar's staying power is staggering, and the 20th Century Fox release will definitely spend its third weekend of release in the #1 spot. James Cameron's sci-fi epic will also almost certainly shatter the best third weekend of all time, which currently belongs to the first Spider-Man with $45 million.

As of 12 p.m. PT, MovieTickets.com is reporting that Avatar boasts an impressive 60 percent of daily sales.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, Sherlock Holmes and It's Complicated should all maintain healthy portions of their audiences.

Sherlock Holmes boasts the best overall rating of the bunch on Flixster with 82 percent. However, Squeakquel ranks ahead of Holmes on MovieTickets.com with 13 percent of sales to 10 percent.
