Weekend Predictions: 'Snow White and the Huntsman' and 'Men in Black 3'
Featured Stories - on May 30, 2012 by Phil Contrino
Snow White and the Huntsman is poised to take the #1 spot away from Men in Black 3 at the box office this coming weekend.
SWATH certainly has the potential to be a minor four-quadrant hit. Women will be drawn to the drama between Kristen Stewart's Snow White and Charlize Theron's Queen Ravenna, while men will be enticed by the idea of Chris Hemsworth—aka Thor from The Avengers—engaging in on some Lord of the Rings-style action scenes. The wide appeal could turn SWATH into an unconventional date night choice. The only thing that the action flick lacks is family appeal—the film's trailers make it clear that SWATH is a bit too dark and brooding for young kids.
Universal needs SWATH to be big. The studio's Battleship severely underperformed domestically in the shadow of Avengers just a few weeks back. Unfortunately, all the tentpoles that have opened since Avengers have disappointed. SWATH will test whether or not the influence of Disney's juggernaut has finally subsided.
As of 4 p.m. PT, Fandango reports that SWATH leads daily sales with 44%.
Look for Snow White and the Huntsman to take in $42 million from around 3,700 locations.
Men in Black 3 should hold up reasonably well during its sophomore frame. Word-of-mouth is solid thanks to a combined 76% approval rating from more than 245,000 Flixster users. More moviegoers may be tempted to catch the film now that they know it's a step above the much-maligned Men in Black 2.
Fandango reports that MiB3 accounts for 23% of daily sales.
Men in Black 3 should muster $27.5 million during its sophomore frame.
