Long Range Forecast: 'Identity Thief' & 'Side Effects'
Featured Stories - on December 15, 2012 by BOXOFFICE Staff
Our Long Range Forecast has been updated this week with two new films scheduled for release on Friday, February 8, 2013: Identity Thief and Side Effects.
Identity Thief
PROS:
- The combination of Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy.
- Director Seth Gordon is hot off the success of Horrible Bosses, The King of Kong and Four Christmases.
CONS:
- Following a couple of comedies in January could lessen demand for another one so early in February.
- Bateman and McCarthy are still growing as a leading actor/actress draws which could result in a slower start for this one.
Side Effects
PROS:
- Even in a supporting role, its hard to bet against Channing Tatum right now.
- Director Steven Soderbergh is coming off the success of Magic Mike and 2011's Contagion.
CONS:
- The nature of the film could result in more back-loading than a big opening.
- Leading lady Rooney Mara isn't a box office draw yet, though her growing presence in well-received films like The Social Network and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo won't hurt this one either.
Notable changes on our forecast this week include The Guilt Trip, Monsters, Inc. 3D, Jack Reacher, This Is 40, Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Parental Guidance and Texas Chainsaw 3D.
