Weekend Forecast: '2 Guns' & 'The Smurfs 2'

Featured Stories - on July 31, 2013 by BOXOFFICE Staff

aug2.pngThis week, Sony's The Smurfs 2 debuted on Wednesday, July 31 to be followed by Universal's 2 Guns on Friday, August 2.

2 Guns

PROS:

- Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg have commanded strong box office power over the last few years.
- With The Wolverine being the latest in a line of live-action flicks that have missed breakout status, that could mean some demand for a more "realistic" actioner.
- Facebook and Flixster activity are trending ahead of Washington's Safe House during comparable points.

CONS:

- Twitter activity, while generally healthy, has been trending behind Safe House.
- Potential overlapping in Washington's and Wahlberg's core audience could prevent a major breakout.
- As August begins, the summer market is expected to slow down.

The Smurfs 2

PROS:

- The first film was a huge hit two summers ago, posting a strong opening weekend and finding healthy legs to boot.
- The established brand name.
- Many kids are still out of school, and with Turbo disappointing, they may check in for this sequel.

CONS:

- Animated sequels are hit and miss at the box office.
- The glut of kiddie movies this summer may have lessened any interest in this sequel.
- The film's Twitter and Flixster activity levels are lagging behind the first movie's.
