Long Range Forecast: 'Out of the Furnace'

Featured Stories - on October 11, 2013 by BoxOffice Staff

furnace.pngThis week, we take a look at December 6's lone wide release: Out of the Furnace.

Out of the Furnace

PROS:

- Christian Bale's popularity has skyrocketed in recent years thanks to the Dark Knight trilogy and his Oscar-winning role in The Fighter.
- As the only wide opener that weekend, and following a weak slate of Thanksgiving openers, Furnace could win over adult audiences with a strong marketing campaign.
- Director Scott Cooper's first film, Crazy Heart, was a critical and Oscar darling--netting Jeff Bridges a Best Actor Oscar. Oscar buzz could be a factor here as well.

CONS:

- Post-Thanksgiving weekends are typically slow as audiences prepare for the busier Christmas and New Year's weeks ahead.
- Although his clout is still increasing, Bale hasn't proven to be a box office draw on his own.

Notable changes on our forecast this week include Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa (up) and The Counselor (down)
