'A Good Day to Die Hard' Bests 'Live Free or Die Hard' At Brazilian Box Office

on March 10, 2013

In the States, A Good Day to Die Hard has been a disappointment, making a mere $63.3 million at the box office in its first month of release -- domestically, it will be the lowest-grossing entry in the Die Hard franchise. At best, Good Day will make just over half of 2007's Live Free or Die Hard's $134.5 haul. But in Brazil, this fifth flick is surpassing its predecessor at the box office: it held on to number one for two weeks, and should rank 2nd in its third week of release. To date, it's raked in $7.1 million, nearly $2 million more than Live Free managed during its entire run -- and that's despite terrible reviews. However, the growth may be attributable less to the Die Hard franchise and more to the burgeoning box office potential of Brazil itself. Though the climb looks like good news for Fox, it could really just be good news for every Hollywood studio looking to sell tickets in South America's biggest market.
