SONY’S DIGITAL CINEMA MOMENTUM CONTINUES WITH RECORD NUMBER OF 4K PROJECTORS SHIPPED; EIGHT YEARS OF CONTINUOUS GROWTH

on April 16, 2013

LAS VEGAS, CinemaCon, April 15, 2013 - Sony Electronics is driving the digital cinema conversion on all fronts. The world's leading 4K digital cinema manufacturer is signing on new theaters at an unprecedented rate, and developing new solutions that are transforming all aspects of a theater's operations.

Sony has shipped more than 15,000 of its 4K projections systems worldwide, including more than 11,000 in the United States, giving Sony an approximate 32% marketshare of total U.S. digital screens, according to Screen Digest. Sony also increased 4K product shipments in the U.S. during 2012 by 20% to complete its eighth consecutive year of growth.

Sony's continued success comes at a time when 4K technology is gaining traction, especially in professional content creation. Sony's 4K camera line includes three models - the F65, F55 and F5. Each camera is in use now shooting motion pictures, TV series, commercials, music videos, and documentaries -- and generating more 4K content. Combined with recent Sony innovations like 4K OLED monitors and Media Cloud Services, the 4K motion picture workflow is now more fully developed, completing an end-to-end 4K production solution that only Sony can deliver.
"Just as we did with 4K projection, Sony is leading the way in 4K content creation," said Gary Johns, senior vice president of Sony's Digital Cinema Solutions group. "Movie-makers now have access to a full 4K production workflow, 4K content is now more widely available, and exhibitors have more 4K programming options. The ultimate in image quality, which 4K represents, is now a reality in the entertainment business. We're proud to offer our customers a complete 4K solution."
xMassif - Content Exchange Platform

In addition to revolutionizing what's happening in the auditorium with its 4K projection systems, Sony is also creating a new model for exchanging and accessing alternative, independent and repertory content among content owners, exhibitors and promoters, in an easy to use and secure environment. The company's new content exchange platform - xMassif -- is an "online marketplace" designed to provide exhibitors with a broad view of all content available and give content owners a standardized model for reaching exhibitors. The new platform is in trial programs to gather customer feedback, an approach Sony takes with all its new products and solutions.

Entertainment Access Glasses

Sony's Entertainment Access Glasses is a unique eyewear and receiver system that provides hearing impaired movie-goers with a more complete and enjoyable theater experience. Sony has shipped more than 6,000 pairs to customers including Regal Entertainment Group, Carmike Cinemas, Muvico Entertainment and Water Gardens.

Theater Management System

Sony continues to update its successful and widely used Theater Management System (TMS) software. The latest generation is a new version designed specifically for specialty or independent exhibitors with a low number of screens per site. TMS Lite will manage up to five projection systems and is designed to work with the new Sony SRX-R515P 4K projection system.

The newest Sony 4K digital cinema exhibitors include: Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas (Aspen Grove, Lakeline, Kalamazoo, Yonkers, Vintage Park, One Loudon, New Braunfels and Richardson); Atlas Midway Cinemas; Aurora Cineplex; Bonner Mall Cinemas; Camera Cinemas; Cinema Salem; Danbarry Cinemas (Middletown and Chillicothe); Dipson West River; Eagle Theater; Entertainment Cinemas, Springfield Plaza; Fox Cineplex; Hometown Cinemas; Illinois Theatre; Kenwood, Mariemont and Esquire Theater; Lake Cinemas 8; Lincoln Center North; LOOK Cinemas; Moviemax; Northland Cinema 5; Plaza Theater; Redwing Cinemas 8; Ridgecrest Cinema; Sawmill Theatres; Star Cinema Grill - Arlington Heights; The Manor Theatre; Uptown Entertainment; and Vintage Cinemas.

"These exhibitors are great examples of the incredible innovation driving our industry," said Johns. We appreciate the opportunity to partner with them and we share their commitment to offering movie-goers the best theater and entertainment experience."
