'Smurfs 2' Leads the Weekend in Brazil
on August 05, 2013
The Smurfs 2 posted the biggest total in its Latin America release from a $4.7 million Brazilian debut. The figure is well below the $6.9 million opening weekend that The Smurfs scored in Brazil in the same weekend of 2011.
The Wolverine ended the weekend in second place, coming close to beating the Smurfs with a $4.1 million hold in its second frame. Brazil is one of the top markets for the superhero film, where it has now grossed $13.9 million. Monsters University has proved to be another popular option for Brazilian audiences; the animated film has earned $16.8 million in the territory. Turbo hasn't had as much luck posting big numbers. The animated Fox/DreamWorks release crossed the $5 million mark after netting $178k in its third weekend in Brazil.
