INDIA: 'Satyagraha' Opens to $9.9M Worldwide

Satyagraha opened in first place among domestic releases in India this week. The political thriller starring the legendary Amitabh Bachchan took in $8.1 million in its first week in India. Overseas grosses for the film showed measured promise, with $569,518 coming from 83 locations in North America, $481,824 from 45 locations in the United Arab Emirates, $283,589 from 49 locations in the United Kingdom, and an additional $430,524 coming in from the rest of the world. The final global cume for the first week of Satyagraha is $9.9 million.
Chennai Express is entering its fifth weekend in North America with a $5.1 million gross. The blockbuster hit has already grossed a total of $33.2 million in India during the same timeframe. Madras Cafe held on to second place in its first hold, posting a $1.2 million weekly total that takes its overall cume in India to $6 million.
