GLOBAL: 'Anchorman 2' Shines with $53.4M Bow; 'Hobbit' Breaks $400M; Slow Start for 'Walking with Dinosaurs'; 'Catching Fire' and 'Gravity' Near $400M Overseas

anch2.pngRon Burgundy and his gang of misfit televesion hosts roared back to the silver screen with a strong overseas debut in only 6 territories. Anchorman 2 took $13.4 million to become the biggest Will Ferrell opener of all time overseas. The United Kingdom leads the charge with a 5-day opening haul of $7.4 million from 460 locations, representing a whopping 725% improvement over the original. Australia took a #1 opening with $5.2 million tally from 243 theaters, nearly seven times the opening figures of the original. New Zealand posted a 400% bump ahead of the original with a $480k second place finish. Anchorman 2 surpassed the lifetime theatrical gross of the original in Sweden ($24k) with a $200k opening weekend from 57 locations. Anchorman 2 will continue its overseas expansion throughout the first quarter of 2014.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug raked in $96 million from 16,830 screens in 56 markets this weekend. The huge number accounts for 10.1 million admissions outside of North America as The Hobbit sequel dropped 43% from its opening weekend overseas. The overseas cume for the film currently stands at $276.3 million, on par with An Unexpected Journey at the same point in release.

Smaug posted the biggest opening weekend of all time for a Warner Brothers release in Russia after taking $18.8 million from 2,115 screens. The strong first place finish represents a 73% marketshare among the top 5 films in Russia.

Germany led the hold-overs with a $14.1 million performance from 1,460 screens to keep the top spot in the country. The second weekend result is merely a 26% drop from its opening weekend. Germany is currently responsible from $38.7 million of the film's global gross.

The latest Hobbit film kept the top spot in the United Kingdom with an $8.5 million take from 1,405 screens. The film has grossed a total of $32.4 million in the U.K. France finished the weekend with an $8.7 million tally from 917 screens, taking its cume in the country to $26 million. Spain added $3.9 million over the weekend to continue in first place and reach a $12.8 million total in the country.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has grossed a worldwide total of $403.8 million.

Walking with Dinosaurs took $13.8 million from 7,576 screens in 40 overseas markets in its debut weekend. The animated film failed to post blockbuster numbers in any of its major markets. The United Kingdom is the biggest opener with $1.6 million from 597 screens. Other top performers include Russia ($1.4M, 1,510 screens), South Korea ($1.4M, 434 screens), Japan ($1.4M, 600 screens), Mexico ($1.1M, 1,204 screens), and France ($1.06M, 487 screens).

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is days away from reaching the $400 million mark overseas. The sequel added $11 million from 83 markets overseas this weekend, taking its total outside of North America to $393.6 million. The top markets for Catching Fire include the United Kingdom ($49.4M), Germany ($36.5M), Australia ($31.4M), China ($28.1M), Russia ($23.9M), Mexico ($22.9M), and France ($22.3M). The film will open in Japan on December 27, where the original only managed to earn $6 million. The global total for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is $765.3 million.

Gravity also finished the weekend just shy of the $400 million overseas mark. The sci-fi spectacle has collected $398.7 million overseas. Gravity is currently in release in 37 markets. Japan is the current leader after grossing $2.3 million from 552 screens over the weekend, taking the film's total in the market to $8.8 million after two frames. Gravity has grossed a total of $687.6 million worldwide.

Frozen added another $35.1 million from 33 territories in its fourth weekend of release. The animated film took a strong #1 opening in Mexico, where it nearly doubled the debut of Tangled with a $5.5 million bow. Italy opened to $2.9 million. The top markets for the film include Germany ($26.4M), the United Kingdom ($26.3M), France ($21.2M), Russia ($19.6M), and Spain ($12M). Frozen has grossed a total of $152.6 million overseas and $344.1 million worldwide.

South Korean audiences have been falling in love over and over again with About Time. The film became the biggest foreign romantic comedy of all time in South Korea and is Universal's biggest release of the year in the market with an 18-day $14.2 million cume. About Time finished its third weekend in South Korea in third place with a $2.9 million take from 289 dates. The romantic comedy enjoyed a limited release in Brazil to the tune of $200k from 122 dates to place eigth in the weekend chart. About Time has grossed a total of $59.7 million overseas and $74.9 million worldwide.

Despicable Me 2 passed Shrek 2 to become the fourth highest grossing animated film of all time worldwide. The Minions have earned a total of $920.3 million from their global run with $552.8 million of that figure coming from overseas. The animated sequel will try to dethrone Finding Nemo's $936.7 million global total with a January 10 release in China to become the #3 animated film of all time.

47 Ronin enjoyed a couple of #1 openings from Malaysia and Singapore to bring in a $6.2 million haul a week ahead of its day-and-date release in North America and 27 overseas territories. The latest Keanu Reeves action vehicle took a $1.1 million debut from 91 dates in Malaysia and a $1 million bow from 27 dates in Singapore. The film finished mid-table in its third weekend in Japan with a $200k performance, taking its 16-day total in the country to $3.5 million.

Italian comedy Colpi di Fortuna challenged Hollywood heavy-hitters The Hobbit and Frozen with a $2.6 million debut from 465 dates. The film took #1 on Saturday but will finish the weekend behind the Hollywood imports in third place.

Saving Mr. Banks climbed to a $5.4 million cume in its second weekend in the United Kingdom, carrying the film's limited overseas presence to a $5.5 million total. The Disney approved biopic has grossed $15.4 million worldwide.

Thor The Dark World crossed the $200 million mark in North America over the weekend, a welcome contribution to the superhero sequel's $627 million global tally. Thor The Dark World has grossed $426.3 million overseas.

Bad Grandpa reached the $43 million mark overseas after a $662k weekend from 877 screens in 16 territories. The raunchy comedy took a #4 opening in Argentina with $104k from 65 dates.
