World Premiere of Disney•Pixar’s “Brave” Heads to Hollywood for Grand Opening of the Dolby Theatre on May 18, 2012

BURBANK, Calif. and SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Disney•Pixar's "Brave," a groundbreaking adventure full of humor, heart and breathtaking action, extends its pioneering spirit to its world premiere on June 18, 2012, marking the Grand Opening of Hollywood's Dolby TheatreSM. The red-carpet event is a special presentation for Film Independent's 2012 Los Angeles Film Festival. Premiering in Dolby 3D, a state-of-the-art imaging solution providing audiences with a superior 3D experience, "Brave" is an epic tale set in the mystical Scottish Highlands where the film's headstrong protagonist, Merida, is forced to discover the meaning of true bravery. The film hits theatres nationwide on June 22, 2012.

"With a spirited heroine and enchanting setting in the ancient Scottish Highlands, ‘Brave' represents some exciting firsts for Pixar," said Ricky Strauss, president, marketing, The Walt Disney Studios. "We are proud that the world premiere of ‘Brave' will serve as the inaugural premiere at the new Dolby Theatre as part of the LA Film Festival, a fitting way to launch Merida's extraordinary adventure."

According to Ramzi Haidamus, executive vice president, sales and marketing at Dolby Laboratories, the 180,000-square-foot, 3,400-seat Dolby Theatre will be a world stage for entertainment and a top venue to host world premieres and launch events. "The world premiere of Disney•Pixar's ‘Brave' in conjunction with the LA Film Festival is perfect for kicking off the next era for Dolby," said Haidamus. "We are committed to creating the best entertainment experiences, and now with the grand opening of the Dolby Theatre, we are honored to host the best as well. This is the first of many exclusive and exciting events-from movie premieres to awards ceremonies-in which Dolby and our technologies will play a featured role."

Celebrating 18 years, the Los Angeles Film Festival will make this special presentation available to Festival attendees with Platinum All-Access or Gold Passes. An additional Gala screening of the film will be held the next day at Regal Cinemas at L.A. LIVE for pass and ticket holders. "We are thrilled to present the world premiere of ‘Brave,' a beautiful adventure story, to our LA Film Fest audience," said Festival Director Stephanie Allain. "As Disney•Pixar's first film with a female protagonist, it fits perfectly with our celebration of Women in Animation programming we'll be holding during the Festival."
With its grand opening, the Dolby Theatre is set to be a showcase for Dolby innovation, including Dolby Atmos, Dolby 3D and other new technologies for years to come. The "Brave" world premiere is sponsored by VisitScotland.

'Battleship' Grabs Underwhelming $420K From Midnight Shows on May 18, 2012

deckerinterview.pngForget about Battleship toppling The Avengers this weekend.

Universal's attempt to mimic the Transformers franchise was able to rake in only $420,000 from midnight shows. How bad is that exactly? Well, Think Like a Man was able to hit $500,000.

Most true blockbusters are able to hit at least $5 million from midnight shows. This does not bode well.

WARNER BROS. PICTURES MARKS NEW STUDIO RECORD FOR FASTEST RISE TO $1 BILLION AT THE INTERNATIONAL BOX OFFICE on May 15, 2012

BURBANK, CA -- On the heels of its strong overseas opening of Dark Shadows and the momentum of its first quarter releases, Warner Bros. Pictures has surpassed the $1 billion threshold in overseas box office in less than five months, surpassing its 2010 Studio record by ten days. This marks the twelfth consecutive year the Division has grossed over $1 billion overseas, beginning in 2001. The announcement was made today by Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President, International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.
The Studio hits this high water mark as it gears up for a full slate of highly anticipated titles later in the year, including Adam Shankman's Rock of Ages, Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, Ben Affleck's Argo, and Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

The Division enjoyed a strong start early in the year with the continued overseas success of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which grossed $257 million in 2012 ($357 million total international box office). This was followed by impressive grosses on the 2D and 3D releases of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island ($222 million) and Wrath of the Titans ($218.3 million). Released in some territories day-and-date with the U.S., Dark Shadows has already grossed $37.3 million, with many markets yet to open. Earnings from 3D venues reached $324 million, representing nearly a third of the Division's cumulative gross for 2012.

"Our success thus far this year would not be possible without the ingenuity of our filmmakers, and the hard work and dedication of our teams around the world," Kwan Vandenberg said. "These remarkable results demonstrate the continued strength of the international business, particularly in rapidly expanding overseas markets and in 3D."

Warner Bros Pictures International has been the market leader in six of the previous 11 years. The Studio has surpassed $1 billion at the international box office a total of 15 times, with four of those years exceeding $2 billion, including 2011. The studio earned $2.87 billion internationally last year, and was the number one studio in Europe.
