GLOBAL: Links to Top 10 Charts from the Major Overseas Markets on April 24, 2013

obl.pngOblivion was the highest grossing film in the global box office for the second consecutive weekend. The success of Tom Cruise's latest blockbuster did not come out of the weekend unchallenged. Domestic films provided tough competition in Brazil (Vai Que Da Certo), France (Les Profs), South Korea (Legendary Fist), Mexico (Nosotros Los Nobles), Russia (Legend No. 17). The sci-fi film was also dethroned in several key markets, raising the possibility of a steeper drop in future weeks. How well will Oblivion fare in its third week with the upcoming overseas roll-out of Iron Man 3 this weekend?

SPAIN: 'Oblivion' Tops Another Lackluster Weekend on April 24, 2013

If last weekend raised eyebrows at the low numbers coming in from Spain, this weekend should start bringing in more questions about the reliability of the Spanish box office. Oblivion fell 53% from last weekend and still managed to maintain the top spot at the box office. The sci-fi film's $1.3 million weekend gross was the only one to break the $1 million mark. Making matters worse, the premiere of Warm Bodies, the second highest grossing film of the weekend, only brought in $481,652. The Croods landed in fifth place during its fifth week in release and is still the only discernible box office success currently in release with a $13 million cume. The weekend's three other new releases failed to make an impact either; Safe Haven, Promised Land, and The Hunt all returned with opening weekends under $400,000. All eyes will be on the upcoming release of Iron Man 3 to see if it can spring Spain's box office out of its slumber.

SOUTH KOREA: 'Oblivion' Holds on to Beat 'Legendary Fist' for #1 on April 24, 2013

It was a two-horse race for the box office title in South Korea last weekend. Oblivion edged out the Korean film, Legendary Fist, in their second consecutive weekend in release. The Tom Cruise vehicle grossed $2.5 million to raise its Korean cume to $8 million. Legendary Fist narrowly missed out on the top spot with a $2.3 million weekend. The Korean film is beating Oblivion in cumulative gross, however, brining in $8.2 million total. Korean action film Running Man is another domestic production to have outgrossed Oblivion, although it has done so with an extra week in release. Running Man has grossed a total of $8.1 million in South Korea.

JAPAN: Four New Releases Revitalize Box Office on April 24, 2013

Four new releases revitalized the Japanese box office last weekend, boosting business across the board as audiences reacted to new options at the cinemas. Meitantei Conan Private Eye 2013 was the undisputed winner, grossing $7.2 million in its opening weekend and amassing a $20,939 per-screen average. Crayon Shin-Can 2013 opened at distant second with $2.4 million, still outgrossing the debut for Lincoln, which opened with $1.7 million. The biggest story, however, comes from the limited release of Steins;Gate: Fuka Ryoiki No Deja Vu. The Japanese film was only rolled out to 18 screens but managed to gross a surprising $931,273. The gross translates into a massive $51,738 per-screen average, the highest of the weekend. The only other film to have made the list after screening in under 300 theaters was Fune Wo Amu, whose $3,695 per-screen gross came from 238 theaters.
