COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Carmike Cinemas, Inc. (NASDAQ: CKEC), the nation's leading motion picture exhibitor in 3D, today highlighted a special live sporting event and a unique upcoming concert film that will both be shown in 3D HD at Carmike theatres later this month.
• NBA All-Star Saturday Night - will be seen live in 3D HD on Saturday, February 14th on many Carmike screens (theatre locations listed below). Turner Sports is collaborating with the NBA and Cinedigm on this exclusive presentation. Special events include the Sprite Slam Dunk contest, the Foot Locker Three-Point Shootout, the Haier Shooting Stars and the PlayStation® Skills Challenge.
• Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience (in Disney Digital 3D) - a high-energy Walt Disney Pictures Rockumentary. Live concert performances by Grammy Award ‘Best New Artist' nominees Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas from their ‘Burning Up' tour are complemented by guest appearances by Demi Lovato and Taylor Swift. The film features humorous off-the-wall segments in addition to never before seen behind-the-scenes footage. Bruce Hendricks (Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert) directs. Opening nationwide on February 27th.
Gary Krannacker, VP-Theatre Operations of Carmike Cinemas, stated, "2009 is shaping up to be a watershed year for 3D films and special events, and Carmike is uniquely positioned to capitalize on this exciting trend as movie theatres evolve into ‘entertainment complexes' equipped to host a wide array of content for the viewing public, beyond feature films. Our theatrical circuit is approximately 95 percent digital and over 20 percent of our screens are already 3D-compatible, with many Carmike multiplexes having the flexibility to show 3D content on as many as five screens simultaneously.
"The year got off to a solid start, with the FedEx BCS National Championship live in 3D HD playing to enthusiastic audiences across our theatrical circuit. Strong attendance helped make this Carmike's top performer at the box office that night. Bolt, released in late 2008 and My Bloody Valentine 3D have underscored the popularity of 3D presentations, and last weekend Coraline (in 3D) was our top performer, although it finished third in overall domestic box office receipts nationwide."
