After a long absence from the screen following his DUI arrest in 2006, Mel Gibson returns in the new trailer for the revenge thriller Edge of Darkness. The film was co-written by William Monahan ( The Departed ) and directed by Martin Campbell ( Casino Royale ), who also directed the 1985 miniseries on which the movie is based. Danny Huston and Ray Winstone co-star.
Historically, studios have had trouble luring people to the movies in January, causing the month to become a dumping ground for weak films. This year, however, Fox opened the English-language, French-produced thriller Taken on the last week of January, which racked up a massive $145 million gross in the United States. Warner Bros. has taken the same date, no doubt hoping for a similar reaction when Edge of Darkness opens on January 29, 2010.
