Friday numbers for November 6th and final ratios.

Twitter Box Office Update

on November 07, 2009

A Christmas Carol opened to a disappointing $8.96 million, less than $1 million more than Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs . Its ratio for Friday for its tweet count was 532, way more than Cloudy 's 282, and an indication that the film missed the mark with much of its younger audience and played more to older patrons which drove up its ratio.

Men Who Stare At Goats pulled in a respectable $4.65 million to give it a 706 ratio. Slightly higher but still in line with The Informant! and The Invention of Lying which had a 580, and 655 ratio respectively.

The Box pulled in $2.851 million for a 841 ratio. I figured Diaz's appeal would draw in some older women who would drive its ratio down and as it turns out that did happen appear to happen based on these numbers.

I had figured that The Fourth Kind would have had a 1,000 ratio like most horrors but it actually had a very strong ratio for its genre with a 742 ratio and $4.99 million. That indicates it attracted an older audience than Zombieland and Saw VI which ended up with a 1,235 and 1,280 ratio respectively even though they both played in much more theatres.

Below is the updated chart for my Twitter tracking history.

The ratio is the number of tweets per $1 million of Friday Box Office gross. A film with 1,000 tweets and a $10 million Friday would therefore have a ratio of 100. In general, films that appeal to very young or older audiences have lower ratios since those audiences are not big users of Twitter. By comparison, films that appeal to younger audiences (18-35) have much higher ratios since those audiences are much more active users of Twitter.
