Steven Spielberg's planned reimagining of Harvey is officially not going to happen . The main problem is that the director was unable to find an actor who was willing to take on the lead role of Elwood P. Dowd, which was made famous by James Stewart. Both Tom Hanks and Robert Downey Jr. passed on the role.

This decision could mean that Spielberg will put his Abraham Lincoln biopic back on track. That project is scripted by Tony Kushner ( Munich ) and Liam Neeson has committed to playing the iconic president.
