Iron Man 2 opened on Friday with an estimated $52.4 million including $7.5 million from midnight shows on Thursday. For full coverage be sure to check BoxOffice.com's daily numbers analysis.

upcoming050710.jpgThis gave the movie a ratio of 1,858, a ways above my estimated 1,550. My prediction of $63 million for Friday also was too high though in the same ballpark. The film's very solid positive to negative ratio (27.86% positive to 8.25% negative) is also a great sign that it should have a solid weekend, especially considering the fact that Mother's Day should offer a solid bump in business. This all points to a weekend of $136 million, a truly impressive number considering the first film came in at just shy of $100 million.

Twitter tracking history. (For 2009's ratio history please check here.)

alltweets050710.jpgThe ratio is the number of tweets per $1 million of Friday Box Office gross. A film with 1,000 tweets and a $10 million Friday would therefore have a ratio of 100. In general, films that appeal to very young or older audiences have lower ratios since those audiences are not big users of Twitter. By comparison, films that appeal to younger audiences (18-35) have much higher ratios since those audiences are much more active users of Twitter.
