John Lithgow ("Dexter") and Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire) have signed on to join James Franco in 20th Century Fox's tentpole reboot of the Planet of the Apes franchise. Titled Rise of the Apes, the film serves as both a sequel and a prequel to the 1968 original.
According to reports, Lithgow will play Franco's Alzheimer's-afflicted father, while Pinto plays a fellow scientist. Rupert Wyatt, who directed the critically successful crime ensemble The Escapist, is helming the film, with a screenplay co-written by Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa.
The last entry in the series was Tim Burton's 2001 remake, which was somewhat commercially successful (grossing $180 million in the US against a $100 million budget), but it was ultimately dismissed by both critics and fans. Fox has been working on the prequel (under the widely-reported codename Caesar) for some time now. It is scheduled for release on June 24, 2011.
