Wednesday Morning Update: The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 had a premiere-fueled bump of 84% on Tuesday to 104,209 tweets and a market share of 55.34%, up from 56,555 tweets and 37.72% market share on Monday. This was the biggest release week Tuesday for a Friday opener of any film in the past three years. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse had 324,167 tweets on the same corresponding day but it was a Wednesday opener which skewed the number up hugely. Ironically, this total breaks the record for Friday openers that was set by The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 last November of 102,487.
Twilight and red carpet (or black carpet as was the case here) always make for great news on Twitter and it was no exception yesterday. I am struck at just how closely its tweets are mirroring the last installment, and provided that this trend continues its going to see a ridiculous 450,000 to 500,000 tweets by the end of Thursday. To put in perspective how huge that number is, a tweet a second in the same four day span (Monday to Thursday) would yield 345,600 tweets. At its peak last night it approached 5 tweets a second. Yes, Twilight fever is still alive and kicking!
$140 million+ should be well within its reach but I'm not seeing a significant increase over the last film that would warrant any expectations of it getting a Harry Potter-esque bump up to the $160 or $170 million range. I hardly think Summit is worried about that though. An opening in this range would cement its place as one of the most profitable franchises ever at the box office which is saying a lot considering its humble roots and obscure subject matter (well at least it used to be obscure back before it was written).
