Wednesday Morning Update: Red Dawn rose a hefty 57% on Tuesday to 7,739 tweets and 5.41% market share, up from 4,930 tweets and 2.9% market share on Monday. Its 12,669 tweets leading up to its release day is the second largest Thanksgiving total from the last four, behind just the 12,933 that The Muppets secured. Wednesday openers are always the most difficult to peg since I have much fewer data points for them. The best comparison I can think of here for this would be Total Recall which had a very similar 7,478 tweets the day before its release. Recall didn't have nearly the same appeal to younger audiences but it was a remake to a much beloved film just like Red Dawn here. I'm expecting a pretty hefty ratio here in the range of ~3,000 which should see it hitting around $4 million on Wednesday and $19.5 million through Sunday.
The Life Of Pi was not as fortunate on Tuesday as it fell 8% to 3,097 tweets and 2.16% market share, down from 3,351 tweets and 1.97% market share on Monday (with Twilight and Skyfall fading market share went up despite the drop in tweets). Hugo should be the perfect marker here for the film and that had 4,405 tweets for its Monday and Tuesday before release (to 6,448 for Pi) which gave it a ratio of 2,646 for its opening day $1.67 million. The same ratio here would see Life Of Pi hitting $2.45 million on opening day and $21 million by the end of the holiday weekend. Excellent start here, and like Hugo it should do very well overseas thanks to its powerful universal story and International cast.
Lastly, Rise Of The Guardians rose 36% on Tuesday to 1,262 tweets and 0.88% market share, up from 927 tweets and 0.55% market share on Monday. This brings its two day release week total to 2,190 tweets. By comparison, Arthur Christmas had 1,127 tweets its Tuesday before release and 1,793 tweets for its Monday/Tuesday total which gave it a ratio of 747 for its opening day Wednesday. Something similar to that will see it hitting ~$3.75 million with its start and $37.5 million through to the end of Sunday.
