The Oscar Bump: How Much Have Best Picture Nominees Made Since Nominations Were Announced?

zdtgrosses.jpgSony's Zero Dark Thirty probably won't walk away with the Best Picture Oscar this coming Sunday, but it's a winner in another way. Director Kathryn Bigelow's controversial look at the hunt for Osama Bin Laden has grossed more money than any other Best Picture nominee since the nominations were announced on Thursday, January 10. Sony timed the film's wide expansion on January 11 to capitalize on Oscar attention.

Silver Linings Playbook has also benefited immensely from the nominations. Harvey Weinstein's team masterfully orchestrated the quirky dramedy's release schedule to capitalize on Oscar buzz. David O. Russell's film still has a decent amount of life left in it.

Django Unchained, Lincoln, Les Misérables, Life of Pi and Argo were already hits before the nominations were announced, but they all got a nice shot of adrenaline anyway. Lincoln in particular has displayed amazing staying power.

Thanks to five nominations, Amour has officially become the foreign film that even people who hate foreign films will go see. Michael Haneke's stark drama should do well even after the ceremony as its run in arthouses across North America continues.

Unfortunately, Beasts of the Southern Wild opened in the summer and it wasn't able to truly capitalize on the Oscar bump. A re-release did yield modest returns.
