A $2.5 million debut from Red 2 confirmed the veteran ensemble cast's star power in France last weekend. The previous entry in the franchise scored a comparable $2.8 million weekend opening weekend in 2010, reaching a $6.9 million cume by the end of its theatrical run. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters settled in second place for the weekend with a $1.9 million hold that pushes the film's total $10.7 million. The Percy Jackson sequel has already surpassed the $10.4 million grossed by its predecessor in France.
The Conjuring posted the weekend's best per-screen average, leading the market with a $7,626 tally from 243 locations. That brings the cume to $5.1 million after two weeks for the horror film, which is showing the potential for a lengthy run at the box office. One Direction: This is Us only played in 100 screens but packed theaters with a $6,845 per-screen average, finishing the weekend in second place within that category.
Now You See Me finished its first month in France with a $22.5 million cume. Elysium culminated its third frame with a $10.3 million total. The Smurfs 2 has been in release since July 31 and is currently playing in a market-leading 617 screens for a $16.1 cume. It is unlikely that the sequel will reach the $24.3 million grossed by its predecessor.
