The entire BoxOffice staff mourns the passing of Philip Seymour Hoffman, a true talent whose work will continue to inspire the film community for years and years.

Hoffman's resume is nothing short of impeccable. It may sound like a cliché, but the Oscar-winning actor really delivered too many great performances to mention in a single breath. Hoffman's work was never boring. He made stealing scenes seem effortless--and no actor or project was immune to his energy. Tom Cruise, George Clooney and Brad Pitt may be more of the leading-man type than Hoffman was, but when they shared scenes with him they clearly had to step up their game and ditch their reliance on established mannerisms. Hoffman made everyone around him better--it's that simple.

Hoffman's untimely death comes on the heels of his widest exposure ever in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. As in all other roles, Hoffman brought a natural gravitas to his portrayal of Plutarch Heavensbee that elevated an already strong film.
