Los Angeles - Cinema Buying Group (CBG), a buying program for independent theaters administered by the National Association of Theatre Owners, today announced an agreement with RealD, the world’s largest digital 3D experience provider. The agreement brings next-generation 3D capability to CBG’s independent cinemas, currently totaling over 8,000 screens in the United States and Canada.

With CBG’s earlier announcement of Access Integrated Technologies, Inc. as its selected digital integrator, the essential ingredients for taking North American independent cinema operators into the digital era, including digital 3D capability, are now in place.

The new generation of digital 3D exemplified by RealD has been hailed as the most vital and exciting development in cinema since the advent of color film.

As the penetration of digital screens grows, we anticipate RealD installations to top 1,000 among CBG members.”

The Cinema Buying Group, a NATO-administered program for independent theater operators, currently represents 643 members with 8,125 screens in the United States and Canada.

NEW YORK - It was announced today that Ken Higgins, Vice President & Head of Film for Cinemark International, will be honored with the “International Achievement Award in Exhibition” at this year’s ShowEast Convention in Orlando, Florida. “ShowEast is thrilled to recognize such an important and highly regarded executive of the international exhibition community,” stated Mitch Neuhauser, Co-Managing Director of ShowEast. “At Cinemark, Higgins has played a key role in Cinemark becoming the global company it is today”.

Ken Higgins began his involvement in the development of the international market for Cinemark in 1991 when he was selected by Lee Roy Mitchell to determine which regions of the world best fit Cinemark’s expansion. In 1992 the decision was made that Cinemark would expand into Latin America. Higgins became the President of Cinemark Mexico and began to assist in the expansion plans.

Higgins played a key role in Cinemark becoming a global company when Cinemark International opened their first theatre outside of the U.S. in Chile in 1993 and then in Mexico in 1994. In 1996 Higgins became Vice President & Head of Film for Cinemark International. He has seen many changes in the industry over the last 39 years and is looking forward to the next decade heading down the 3D and Digital path.

Today Cinemark has 121 theatres with 1,011 screens in 12 countries. Cinemark International has eight foreign offices.

The presentation of the 2008 “International Achievement Award in Exhibition” will take place on Monday, October 13th at the Orlando World Center Marriott as part of the Annual International Day Program. Past winners include Alejandro Ramirez Magaña and Cinépolis, Francisco A. Gonzalez, Sr. and MMCinema; Munir Falah and Cine Colombia; and Tim Warner and Cinemark International.

NEW YORK - Larry Collins, Senior Vice President of Film for Carmike Cinemas, will be honored with the 2008 “Show ‘E’ Award” at the upcoming ShowEast convention, it was announced by Mitch Neuhauser, Co-Managing Director of the annual convention. Collins will be awarded this distinguished honor on Thursday evening, October 16, 2008 at the Orlando World Center Marriott as part of the Final Night Banquet and Awards Ceremony at ShowEast. The annual “Show ‘E’ Award” is presented to an industry member whose achievements, accomplishments and dedication to the industry are unequalled.

“ShowEast is truly honored to be able to single out Larry Collins with this year’s Show ‘E’ Award”, noted Mitch Neuhauser. “Throughout his 40-year career in the business, he has achieved enormous success in bringing quality films to theatres across the country through his astute negotiating and excellent reputation with film companies and distributors”.

Collins joined Carmike Cinemas in 1994 as a Film Buyer where he supervised bookers in selecting and placing films in competitive and non-competitive markets. He was promoted to Vice President of Film in 2005, a role in which he supervises the Film Buyers who oversee daily theatre bookings and projects bookings and coordinates with Film Buyers on allocations in competitive markets. Collins also negotiates with radio/TV stations and distributors to set promotional advanced film screenings.

Carmike Cinemas is headquartered in Columbus, Georgia. It currently operates 262 theaters in 36 states. Carmike Cinemas targets small to mid-sized communities with populations of 50,000-250,000 where it is the sole or premier exhibitor in those niche markets.

Prior to joining Carmike Cinemas, Collins was the Vice President of Film for Cinema World Theatres (1992-1994), Head Film Buyer for Cinemette Theatres (1978-1994), Film Buyer for Milgram Theatres Inc. (1973-1978) and Student Booker with Universal Pictures (1969-1973).

Past recipients of the “Show ‘E’ Award” have included: David Tuckerman, Bill Stembler, Nick Carpou & Mark Gaines, Chuck Viane, Herman Stone, Jeff Blake, Bruce Snyder and Mike Campbell.

ShowEast 2008 will take place from October 13-16, 2008 at the Orlando World Center Marriott. Delirium is a state-of-the-art mix of music, gravity-defying athletics, dance, theater and multimedia. Audiences and critics have raved over its dazzling visuals, and the musicians, singers and dancers who transform an arena into what has been frequently described as “joyous frenzy.” Driven by an urban tribal beat, Delirium is “a quest for balance in a world increasingly out of sync with reality.” Created by Michel Lemieux and Victor Pilon, it is directed for film by David Mallet. The film version captures in stunning, razor-sharp high definition the last performance of the London production in 2008.

Christie digital projectors literally shined in the contemporary, high-tech stage production, where innovative lighting was an integral part of the show. Up to 36 performers on 270 square feet of projection space were bathed in more than 200,000 ANSI lumens of brightness from seven Christie Roadie projectors and two Christie Roadster S+20K’s.
