LOS ANGELES - July 30, 2014 - According to Fandango, the nation's leading moviegoer destination, Marvel Studios' sci-fi action epic "Guardians of the Galaxy" is on track to take off this weekend, scoring 94 out of 100 points on the company's Fanticipation movie buzz indicator.

James Gunn's highly anticipated adventure is capturing 93% of this weekend's ticket sales on Fandango, and outselling previous Marvel franchise debuts, "Thor" and "Captain America," at the same point in the sales cycle. The film is poised to be the biggest August pre-seller in Fandango's history, far outpacing advance sales for the previous record-holder, Matt Damon's 2007 "The Bourne Ultimatum," and pacing to be this year's #1 non-sequel pre-seller, beating the previous record-holder, "The LEGO Movie."

Fandango has surveyed more than 1,000 "Guardians" ticket-buyers on its site and found that:
95% are attracted by the film's off-the-wall humor;

87% plan to attend the movie with a group of friends on opening weekend;

85% are looking forward to seeing Chris Pratt in his breakout role as Peter Quill ("Star-Lord");

80% are already interested in seeing additional "Guardians" movies;

73% claimed the movie's retro soundtrack made them more excited to see it;

67% picked Rocket Racoon (Bradley Cooper) as the otherworldly character they're most anticipating;

58% were previously unfamiliar with the "Guardians" comic books.

"In a year filled with sequels and remakes, ‘Guardians' feels fresher and more fun than any superhero movie so far this year," says Fandango Chief Correspondent Dave Karger. "Fans are craving the film's originality and that's translating to stellar advance ticket sales for a franchise first. Chris Pratt makes for a charmingly goofy and commanding hero in ‘Guardians,' and between this leading role and his voice work in ‘The LEGO Movie,' 2014 is shaping up to be Pratt's breakout year."

Wednesday Morning Update: Guardians Of The Galaxy rose 45% on Tuesday to 29,823 tweets, up from 20,609 tweets on Monday while its Facebook likes increased to 775,721 from 766,750. For the first time in a week it also nabbed the top spot on the day amongst all upcoming films on Twitter, something which has eluded it not because of low numbers but because of a few high profile trailers which grabbed some serious attention (Hobbit, 50 Shades, Hunger Games). By comparison The Avengers which had 51,744 tweets and 1,365,187 likes its Tuesday before release, Green Lantern with 2,909 tweets and 233,977 likes, Thor with 7,675 tweets and 356,954 tweets and Captain America: The First Avenger with 4,909 tweets and 673,322 likes. The level of social media buzz here for a net new superhero entry is pretty staggering and I would say it looks like a sure shot to eclipse the opening marks of all my comparisons save for Avengers which would make $70 million plus be in play.

Get On Up had another stellar rise with a 198% bump in tweet traffic to 3,908 tweets, up from 1,311 tweets on Monday, while its Facebook likes increased from 255,908 to 256,723. By comparison, Jersey Boys had 2,022 tweets and 137,631 likes its Tuesday before release, and 42 had 3,158 tweets and 296,481 likes. I believe this has more in the tank than Jersey Boys but will end up a ways shy of 42 for a couple of reasons, namely that its Facebook numbers and growth are behind and because its Twitter numbers are actually running not that far ahead of 42 which had a very common name and had to have a lot of restrictions in place to narrow down relevant tweets for. Teen millions on the weekend look probable.

One thing I wanted to mention was 50 Shades Of Grey which set a Twitter record for tweets for a trailer with just over 240,000 tweets last Thursday. This beat out the old record set by The Fault In Our Stars of 145,810 earlier this year. Really isn't surprising especially when casting news alone saw it surpass 16k tweets almost a year ago. Since the trailer hit its Facebook likes went up over 1.5 million to almost 5 million now which makes it the most liked upcoming movie that is not a sequel. This is clearly going to continue to be a social media heavyweight for years to come.

Universal's Lucy took in $4.97 million on Monday to lead the daily box office for a fourth consecutive day. The modestly budgeted sci-fi action film starring Scarlett Johansson fell 58 percent from Sunday. Lucy continues to exceed expectations with a strong four-day start of $48.87 million and will zoom past the $50 million mark today. The film is currently running 22 percent ahead of the $40.13 million four-day take of 2010's Salt.

Hercules continued to hold its own with a second place take of $3.34 million. The Dwayne Johnson led 3D action-adventure film from Paramount and MGM did fall 61 percent from Sunday, which represented the day's poorest daily percentage hold among wide releases. Hercules has grossed a stronger than expected $33.14 million in four days. That places the film 8 percent behind the $36.03 million four-day start of 2012's Wrath of the Titans.

Fox's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes took third place with $2.21 million. The critically acclaimed 3D sci-fi action sequel was down 58 percent from Sunday and down a so-so 47 percent from last Monday. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has clearly taken a bit of a hit from the stronger than expected performances of Lucy and Hercules. With that said the film continues to exceed expectations with $174.67 million in 18 days.

Universal's The Purge: Anarchy claimed fourth with $1.53 million. The low budget horror sequel was down just 50 percent from Sunday and down a respectable 54 percent from last Monday. The Purge: Anarchy continues to perform well and has now grossed $53.39 million in eleven days. That places the film just ahead of the $53.14 million eleven-day take of last year's The Purge.

Planes: Fire and Rescue followed closely behind in fifth with $1.499 million. The modestly budgeted computer animated sequel from Disney fell 51 percent from Sunday and just 19 percent from last Monday. With an eleven-day take of $36.85 million, Planes: Fire and Rescue is currently running 21 percent behind the $46.76 million eleven-day gross of last year's Planes.

Tuesday Morning Update: Guardians Of The Galaxy continued its strong run on Monday as it accounted for 20,609 tweets, down 11% from Sunday's 23,154 tweets. The film is one of the last major Summer releases and has been getting a massive marketing push over the last few weeks to try to funnel as much dollars as possible into its opening weekend. To add fuel to the buzz fire the early reviews have been overwhelmingly favorable. The appeal here is vast and covers just about all demographics and while the Guardians Of The Galaxy are not household names like other strong Marvel franchises like Iron Man or Captain America they have done a great job at tying this into the extended Marvel Universe (those who stayed for the end of Thor: The Dark World would have seen the character The Collector who appears in this film). Other notable comparisons include The Avengers which had 45,936 tweets its Monday before release, Green Lantern with 2,354, Thor with 2,823 and Captain America: The First Avenger with 4,706. These comparisons are admittedly dated but this will be the first major Marvel adaptation that is not a sequel (or include main characters from previous films - aka The Avengers) since 2011. Clearly they have been looking for the right project to invest in and so far this looks like a very smart move on their part.

Its Facebook numbers have also been very strong as it had 766,750 likes by the end of yesterday, by comparison The Avengers had 1,326,867 likes, Green Lantern had 229,562, Thor had 320,851 and Captain America: The First Avenger had 666,414.

Start to line up sequels to this because its clear that this is going to be a huge success this weekend, its just a matter of how much of a success at this point.

Get On Up had a strong rise on Monday of 85% to 1,311 tweets from 706 tweets on Sunday, while its Facebook likes increased from 255,650 to 255,908. A solid counter-programming option on the weekend it will appeal to older moviegoers and fans of the late James Brown. I'm not that worried about lower Twitter numbers here as its target audiences are not exactly social media power-users. By comparison, Jersey Boys had 2,056 tweets and 135,045 likes its Monday before release, 42 had 2,283 tweets and 287,281 likes. The early signs here are definitely pointing to mid to upper teens which is a very strong start for the film.
