LOS ANGELES -Dennis Quaid, will receive the ShoWest 2009 Male Star of the Year Award, it was announced today by Mitch Neuhauser, co-managing director of the event, which will be held March 30-April 2, 2009, in Las Vegas. Quaid will be presented with the ShoWest Male Star of the Year Award at ShoWest's Final Night Banquet and Award Ceremony on Thursday, April 2, at Bally's and Paris Las Vegas.
"Dennis Quaid's impressive accomplishments as an actor and his charismatic onscreen presence have been entertaining audiences for over three decades," said Neuhauser. "Since first bursting onto the scene with his sensitive portrayal of a struggling youth in the terrific Breaking Away, through films like The Right Stuff, Any Given Sunday, The Parent Trap, The Rookie, The Parent Trap, Traffic, The Day After Tomorrow and Vantage Point, Quaid's body of work is as diverse and varied which is all a testament to his ability and talent as a great actor. ShoWest is honored in its own right to be able to single him out as its 2009 Male Star of the Year."
Since landing in Hollywood and securing a breakout role in Breaking Away, Dennis Quaid has gone on to build a remarkable body of work that includes such films as Great Balls of Fire, Something to Talk About, Any Given Sunday, Wyatt Earp, The Parent Trap, Traffic, The Rookie, The Day After Tomorrow and Smart People, to name just a few. His 2002 role as a closet homosexual in 1950's New York, in the critically acclaimed Far From Heaven, netted Quaid the New York Film Critics Circle and The Independent Spirit Award as "Best Supporting Actor." The role also garnered Quaid nominations for a Golden Globe Award and Screen Actor's Guild Award.
Quaid's voice will next be featured in the Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions' 3D Film Battle for Terra, releasing on May 1, 2009. Battle for Terra tells the story of Senn and Mala, two rebellious alien teens living on the beautiful planet Terra, a place that promotes peace and tolerance, having long-ago rejected war and weapons of mass destruction. But when Terra is invaded by human beings fleeing a civil war and environmental catastrophe, the planet is plunged into chaos. During the upheaval, Mala befriends an injured human pilot and each learns the two races are not so different from one another. Together they must face the terrifying realization that in a world of limited resources, only one of their races is likely to survive.
Quaid can also be seen this summer as part of the ensemble cast in the Paramount Pictures action adventure, G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra, and this fall in the Overture Films horror film Pandorum. Next year, he can be seen in the dramatic thriller Legion, releasing in January 2010, from Sony Screen Gems.
