Guardians of the Galaxy took in $7.63 million on Thursday to lead the daily box office for a seventh consecutive day. The blockbuster 3D sci-fi superhero film from Disney and Marvel was down 13 percent from Wednesday. It should be noted that wide releases in general experienced sizable daily percentage declines on Thursday due in part to both Paramount's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Warner's Into the Storm entering the marketplace on Thursday evening. Guardians of the Galaxy rocketed to a stronger than expected first week performance of $134.39 million. That places the film an impressive 14 percent ahead of the $117.61 million seven-day start of Captain America: The Winter Soldier earlier this year.

Universal's Lucy held steady in a distant second with $1.68 million. The modestly budgeted sci-fi action film starring Scarlett Johansson fell 12 percent from Wednesday and 48 percent from last Thursday. Lucy placed in second for the week with $26.74 million. That was down a sizable 56 percent from the previous frame, but brings the film's two-week total to a strong $88.02 million. Lucy is currently running 9 percent ahead of the $80.88 million two-week take of 2010's Salt.

Hercules took in $0.89 million to remain in third place. The Dwayne Johnson led 3D action-adventure film from Paramount and MGM was down 23 percent from Wednesday and a sharp 58 percent from last Thursday. Hercules finished in fourth for the week with $16.11 million. That was down 61 percent from the previous frame and brings the film's two-week total to a respectable $57.76 million.

Universal's Get on Up claimed fourth place with $0.80 million. The James Brown biopic starring Chadwick Boseman decreased 16 percent from Wednesday. Get on Up finished in third for the week with a seven-day start of $17.91 million. That was below pre-release expectations and was a disappointing 50 percent softer than the $36.03 million seven-day take of last year's 42.

Fox's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes rounded out the day's unchanged top five with $0.74 million. The 3D sci-fi action sequel fell 22 percent from Wednesday and 54 percent from last Thursday. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes continues to exceed expectations with a 28-day take of $193.43 million. That leaves the film just $6.57 million away from reaching the $200 million domestic milestone.

image.jpgDisney reports that Guardians of the Galaxy added $8.8 million on Wednesday for a 26 percent day-to-day drop. That represents the best first Wednesday gross by any film in 2014, topping Transformers: Age of Extinction's $7.7 million. Through 6 days, Marvel's Guardians has amassed $126.76 million domestically--47 percent ahead of the pace of 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger, as well as 12 percent ahead of Captain America: The Winter Soldier through the same respective points. After an opening weekend just 6 percent below the fourth Transformers, Guardians is now a mere 1.5 percent off its pace.

Get On Up took in $0.95 million yesterday, off 29 percent from Tuesday, to give it $17.1 million through its first 6 days. The James Brown biopic trails 42 and Lee Daniels' The Butler by 52 percent and 48 percent, respectively, through the same point in release.

Lucy took third place on Wednesday with $1.9 million, down 49 percent from the same day last week. The Scarlett Johansson flick has earned a strong $86.3 million through 13 days of release, 10 percent more than 2010's Salt through the same point.

Hercules claimed fourth yesterday with $1.16 million, representing a 56 percent week-to-week drop. Through 13 days, the pic has totaled $56.9 million domestically--10 percent behind Wrath of the Titans through the same point.

Rounding out the top five, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes slipped 49 percent from last Wednesday to $0.94 million yesterday. The sequel's total through 27 days is $192.7 million, or 27 percent more than its 2011 predecessor claimed through the same period.

Thursday Morning Update: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had the biggest fall on Wednesday amongst the new openers as it dropped 33% to 11,193, down from 16,799 tweets on Tuesday.

By comparison, Transformers: Age Of Extinction had 78,963 tweets its Wednesday before release while Godzilla had 48,112. We are predicting $40 million for the film on the weekend which will be good enough for #2 on the weekend behind the returning Guardians Of The Galaxy's $44 million.

Into The Storm eclipsed the Turtles for the first time on the week on Wednesday as it rose 200% to 21,078 tweets, up from 7,030 tweets on Tuesday. Very strong increase for the film and as such we are predicting $14 million for it over the weekend.

Step Up All In and The Hundred Foot Journey both had trouble at posting a big increase on Wednesday as they rose 1% and 16% respectively. Yes its true this was much better than Turtles in terms of increases but the lower numbers overall here really limit their potential. We are predicting $10.2 million and $10.3 million respectively for the films.

fandango.pngLOS ANGELES - August 7, 2014 - According to Fandango, the nation's leading moviegoer destination, Michael Bay's "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' (opening tonight) is shredding its way to the top of the company's Fanticipation movie buzz indicator, scoring a powerful 89 out of 100 points, while "Guardians of the Galaxy" stands strong with 87 points in its second week.

Moviegoers are shelling out big time for "Turtles," with the movie leaping to the top of Fandango's weekend ticket pre-sales. Representing a major slice of tickets since Monday, "Turtles" shows no signs of slowing. It is outpacing both 2009's "G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra" and 2013's "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" at the same point in the Fandango sales cycle.

Fandango surveyed more than 1,000 "Turtles" ticket-buyers on its site and found that:
87% watched the cartoon series;
82% had seen one of the previous movies;
72% are fans of the film's producer, Michael Bay;
57% are fans of the film's star, Megan Fox;
56% picked Michelangelo as their favorite turtle.
"Like last week's blockbuster, ‘Guardians,' ‘Turtles' is a family-oriented action movie appealing to tweens and teens as well as parents looking for a fantasy nostalgia trip," says Fandango Chief Correspondent Dave Karger. "Throw in some giant action set-pieces courtesy of producer Michael Bay, and you've got the recipe for a late summer hit."

Fandango is unveiling original artwork and videos inspired by "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," including a unique time lapse video of Cleveland-based artist George Vlosich recreating the famous "Turtles" characters as an incredible Etch A Sketch portrait. Fandango is also debuting exclusive fan-created "Turtles" artwork (by Tracy Tubera) and an exclusive "Ninja Turtles" infographic by Kansas City artist Rachel Ignotofsky.
