Worldwide patent applications are in progress. The patented, ground-breaking technology enables high-brightness 3D image projection in cinemas using a three-beam optical system. In order to improve sharpness and clarity of 3D imagery on-screen, the three-way beam technology provides best-in-class alignment between pass-through and reflected images, which is superior to processes used by existing two-beam solutions. Incorporating a novel precision polarized beam-splitter (PBS), the MasterImage 3D method efficiently achieves higher performance of polarization and support for throw-ratios as low as 0.8, the lowest in the industry. The MasterImage 3D method improves brightness efficiency; moreover, by eliminating the magnification lens found in competitive products, it also enhances the ease of installation and operation.

This newly patented 3D process is the technology behind MasterImage 3D's MI-HORIZON3D digital cinema system. The MI-HORIZON3D debuted this year at the annual CinemaCon tradeshow in Las Vegas, demonstrating the potential for cinemas to deliver up to 14 foot-lambert (ft-L) 3D.

After placing in a close third over the weekend, Fox's Rio 2 moved back into first place on Monday with $2.68 million. The 3D computer animated sequel from Blue Sky Studios was down just 43 percent from Sunday and essentially unchanged from last Monday, as the Monday after Easter is traditionally a very strong day for family films. Rio 2 has grossed a very solid $77.72 million through eleven days of release. That places the film 8 percent behind the $84.15 million eleven-day take of 2011's Rio (which fell 42 percent to take in $3.34 million on the Monday after Easter).

Disney's Captain America: The Winter Soldier placed in a very close second with $2.595 million. The blockbuster 3D superhero sequel from Marvel was down 55 percent from Sunday and down a healthy 25 percent from last Monday. Captain America: The Winter Soldier has grossed $203.096 million through 18 days and will soon surpass the $206.36 million final domestic gross of last year's Thor: The Dark World. The Winter Soldier is currently running 22 percent ahead of the $169.28 million 18-day take of The Dark World.

Heaven is for Real took third place on Monday with $2.49 million. The low-budget faith-based drama from Sony was down 61 percent from Sunday, which was quite understandable given the film's strong daily hold on Easter Sunday. Heaven is for Real surpassed the $30 million mark yesterday and continues to outpace expectations with an impressive six-day start of $32.04 million. That is 15.5 percent stronger than the $27.73 million six-day take of 2010's The Last Song. With the aid of strong word of mouth, Heaven is for Real is likely to hold up nicely going forward.

Warner's Transcendence claimed fourth place with $0.997 million. The pricey sci-fi film starring Johnny Depp was down 56 percent from Sunday. Transcendence has grossed an extremely disappointing $11.88 million in its first four days of release. That represents a very poor performance given the film's price tag and is quite similar to the $12.86 million four-day start of 2007's Grindhouse. Given its performance thus far, Transcendence looks to fade away from theatres quickly.

Open Road's A Haunted House 2 rounded out the day's top five with $0.665 million. The low-budget horror comedy sequel starring Marlon Wayans fell 62 percent from Sunday, which represented one of the day's poorer daily percentage holds among wide releases. A Haunted House 2 is performing below expectations with a four-day start of $9.51 million and is currently running 50 percent behind the $19.08 million four-day start of last year's A Haunted House.

After a lackluster start over the weekend, Bears experienced the day's strongest percentage hold among wide releases, as it was down just 28 percent from Sunday to land in sixth with $0.653 million. The latest nature documentary from Disneynature should have another great hold today thanks to Earth Day. Bears has grossed $5.43 million in four days, which places it 18.5 percent behind the $6.66 million four-day take of 2011's African Cats.

Tuesday Morning Update: The Other Woman led the upcoming new openers on Monday with 3,262 tweets and 14th spot overall on the day. It also had the biggest non-news related increase on the day with just over 87% from its Sunday returns. The film should skew heavily female with a majority being over 30 which should bring its ratio down significantly from the teen-girl demo films such as Vampire Academy, Endless Love, and Divergent which all rang in with ratios of over 18,000 to have the three highest ratios on the year respectively. By comparison, Bad Teacher had 4,553 tweets its Monday before release while That Awkward Moment had 7,632. Solid beginning here for the film which definitely has the chops to be the top new film this week, and maybe even with a little luck the top film overall.

Brick Mansions was 16th on Monday with 3,016 tweets, up just over 50% from its Sunday returns of 1,979. The last full film by Paul Walker before his tragic death last year it has drawn a lot of interest on Twitter over the past few months. By comparison, Sabotage had 2,342 tweets its Monday before release and Fast And Furious 6 had 66,785 tweets. Pretty ordinary beginning for the film especially considering that it is getting a lot of extra attention because of Walker. I don't have huge expectations for this one given the buzz levels and double digits seems to be nothing but a pipe dream.

The Quiet Ones brought up the rear with 1,351 tweets on Monday, good enough for only 25th place on the day. Horror's traditionally tend to generate a ton of buzz on Twitter so the fact that this is lagging so far behind is more than a red flag. Oculus had 7,791 tweets its Monday before release, while Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones had 5,214. The Quiet Ones seems destined to be quiet indeed and with these numbers I doubt if it will even be able to throw up $5 million over the weekend.

mpaa.pngBEIJING/SINGAPORE - The strong and growing partnership between the American and Chinese film industries was the focus of a recently concluded visit to China to attend the 4th Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF) by Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) Chairman and CEO Chris Dodd.

Delivering a keynote address at the Sino-Foreign Film Co-Production Forum on April 17, Senator Dodd remarked that China had contributed in large part to a record-breaking year for the 2013 movie business, contributing US $3.6 billion to a total global box office of US $35.93 billion: "Congratulations to everyone here, and everyone in the Chinese film industry whose determined efforts made that momentous accomplishment possible. The film studios that I represent are excited to be part of this expanding market, and are eagerly looking forward to another great year."

Senator Dodd acknowledged that the Beijing International Film Festival had made a vivid impression on the international film calendar in a short period of time: "This world-class event is a remarkable opportunity for members of the global film community to celebrate and showcase great examples of storytelling and filmmaking, and the Motion Picture Association is proud to have been a supporter since its inception."

On April 18, Senator Dodd addressed members of the U.S. business community in Beijing at an AmCham China Media and Entertainment Forum breakfast event entitled Big Screen, Big Markets: U.S.-China Relations in the Film Business. Remarking on the extraordinary story of the growth of the Chinese film market, Senator Dodd noted, "Many diverse factors are responsible for influencing the astonishing growth and success that we are seeing in the Chinese film industry, as well as in the great partnership of our two industries: government contributions, assistance from global bodies like the World Trade Organization, trade bodies and film associations in both countries; and, of course, the dedication of so many people who go to work every in this business. (However) ...the biggest factor has been the demand for good content by Chinese audiences and the unprecedented expansion of theatrical screens throughout the country."

On April 19, at the closing ceremony of the two-day long MPA-BFM Film Workshop, themed "Imagination", Senator Dodd highlighted World IP Day (April 26) which this year proclaimed "Movies: A Global Passion", as the theme for celebrations: "This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the successes of the Chinese film industry, and appreciate the people who have embarked on creative professions: in movie-making, the cinema or in the online-video sector - in fact any one of millions of jobs that are supported by this vibrant industry - who work every day to help entertain, educate and enlighten audiences here and around the globe."

Acknowledging the important contributions by leading Chinese film industry executives, Senator Dodd presented special MPA Awards to Yang Buting, Chairman of CFDEA; Zhu Yongde, Chairman of CFCA and Han Zhiyu, Director of Beijing Copyright Alliance for their valuable contribution to promoting and protecting the work and livelihoods of the screen community in China.

In addition, as part of World IP Day celebrations in China, Senator Dodd attended a special World IP Day screening of Rio 2 at the launch of a School IPR Ambassador Program. About 80 elementary and high school students were treated to a speech from animation director Carlos Saldanha who complimented the children on their awareness of creative intellectual property.

Senator Dodd also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the China Film Copyright Association (CFCA) and the Motion Picture Association (MPA) which continues a fruitful and productive working relationship between the two parties.

On April 20, the MPA partnered with IWC in the 2nd IWC MPA American Film Night, where Senator Dodd presented well-known Chinese filmmaker Feng Xiaogang with an MPA Award acknowledging his outstanding contribution to Sino-US film relationships.

Disney's Captain America: The Winter Soldier took in $25.59 million this weekend to lead the weekend box office for a third consecutive frame. The blockbuster 3D superhero sequel from Marvel surpassed the $200 million domestic milestone on Sunday, making it the second release of 2014 to reach the milestone (The LEGO Movie being the first). Captain America: The Winter Soldier was down 38 percent from last weekend, which indicates that strong word of mouth is really starting to kick in for the film. With a 17-day take of $200.50 million, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is now running 19 percent ahead of the $167.92 million 17-day gross of last year's Thor: The Dark World and will soon surpass that film's final domestic gross of $206.36 million.

Heaven is for Real exceeded its rapidly rising expectations this weekend with a second place start of $22.52 million. The low-budget faith-based drama from Sony moved into second place for the weekend, just ahead of Rio 2, after experiencing an especially strong hold on Easter Sunday. Heaven is for Real has grossed $29.56 million in its first five days of release. With a five-day to three-day ratio of 1.31 to 1, Heaven is for Real clearly built up major momentum once the weekend arrived and as it went on, as moviegoers were in the mood to catch the film over Easter weekend. The five-day start for Heaven is for Real was an impressive 16 percent stronger than the $25.39 million five-day launch of The Last Song over Easter weekend back in 2010.

Heaven is for Real took in $7.85 million on Good Friday, increased 5 percent on Saturday to take in $8.27 million and fell just 23 percent on Sunday to gross $6.39 million. The film's opening weekend to Friday ratio of 2.87 to 1 was extremely strong for a faith-based film over Easter weekend and is a very good early sign going forward. The film's A rating on CinemaScore is also a strong sign for the film. The audience breakdown for Heaven is for Real skewed heavily towards female moviegoers (62 percent) and slightly towards moviegoers 35 years and older (51 percent).

Fox's Rio 2 was down one spot from last weekend to place in third with $22.16 million. The 3D computer animated sequel from Blue Sky Studios fell 44 percent. That represented a harsher second weekend decline than 2011's Rio experienced, when it fell 33 percent to gross $26.32 million. Rio 2 has grossed $75.05 million through ten days of release. That is 7 percent softer than the $80.81 million ten-day take of Rio, but Rio 2 is still performing well in its own right, especially when considering its strength overseas. With the lack of high-profile animated releases entering the marketplace between now and June 13, when Fox releases How to Train Your Dragon 2, Rio 2 is likely to stabilize going forward.

Warner's Transcendence bombed this weekend with a fourth place start of just $10.89 million. The pricey sci-fi film starring Johnny Depp had been widely expected to get off to a lackluster start this weekend, but the film was ultimately unable to live up to its relatively modest expectations for a film of its cost. Clearly, the film's largely negative critical reviews didn't help matters this weekend. The opening weekend performance of Transcendence was quite similar to the $11.59 million launch of Grindhouse over Easter weekend back in 2007.

Transcendence opened with $4.81 million on Friday (with an alarmingly high $850,000 of that total coming from Thursday night shows), fell a harsh 21 percent on Saturday to take in $3.82 million and slid 41 percent on Sunday to gross $2.25 million. The film's opening weekend to Friday ratio of 2.26 to 1 was soft for a film aimed at adult audiences over Easter weekend. The audience breakdown for the film skewed towards male moviegoers (56 percent) and moviegoers over the age of 25 (56 percent). Transcendence looks to fade away from theatres quickly, especially with it having received a disappointing C+ rating on CinemaScore.

Off to a lackluster start of its own this weekend was Open Road's A Haunted House 2. The low-budget horror comedy sequel starring Marlon Wayans debuted in fifth with $8.84 million. That was below pre-release expectations and was a disappointing 51 percent softer than the $18.10 million start of last year's A Haunted House. A Haunted House 2 opened with $4.05 million on Friday, fell 25 percent to take in $3.03 million on Saturday and declined 42 percent on Sunday to gross $1.77 million. That placed the film's opening weekend to Friday ratio at just 2.19 to 1. A Haunted House 2 received an underwhelming B- rating on CinemaScore and is extremely likely to be front-loaded towards its opening weekend performance.

The weekend's other new wide release, Bears, debuted in tenth with $4.78 million. The latest nature documentary from Disneynature opened softer than was widely anticipated and 20 percent below the $6.00 million start of African Cats over Easter weekend back in 2011. However, it should be noted that African Cats did have the added advantage of having Earth Day fall on its opening Friday. With Earth Day falling this coming Tuesday, Bears is likely to hold up nicely during the midweek. The film received a strong A rating on CinemaScore.
