sonypictures.pngCULVER CITY, Calif., July 31, 2014 - Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) announced today that Michael Pavlic, Executive Vice President of Creative Advertising, has been promoted to President, Worldwide Creative Advertising. Pavlic will take over the position previously held by Tommy Gargotta, who is stepping aside. Reporting to Dwight Caines, President of Domestic Theatrical Marketing for Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group, Pavlic will lead the domestic and international creative advertising team in launching all motion pictures released by Columbia and Sony Pictures Animation worldwide.

"Mike is a talented and passionate creative executive whose instincts are as strong as his commitment to great work," said Caines. "I am thrilled that he will be mentoring and leading the team as we rebuild for the future."

Since rejoining SPE in 2009, Pavlic has worked on the campaigns of many of the studio's recent hit films, including 22 Jump Street, American Hustle, Zero Dark Thirty, Grown Ups 2, Moneyball, Zombieland and Julie & Julia. Previously, he worked at Big Picture Entertainment as an editor and producer. Earlier, he worked at SPE from 2003-2005 as Manager of Creative Advertising.

jul25.pngUniversal reports that Lucy took in $3.74 million yesterday, off 31 percent from Tuesday. Its 6-day domestic total stands at $58.05 million, or 20.5 percent ahead of where 2010's Salt was at the same point.

Paramount's and MGM's Hercules grabbed $2.6 million on Wednesday for a 31 percent daily drop. The Dwayne Johnson-led pic has earned $39.5 million thus far, 4 percent behind the pace of Wrath of the Titans.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes took third yesterday with $1.85 million, off 52.5 percent from the same day last week. Its domestic cume is now $179.0 million, 29 percent ahead of its predecessor through the same point in release.

Planes: Fire and Rescue grossed $1.37 million on Wednesday for a 35 percent week-to-week drop. The animated sequel has earned $39.9 million in its first 13 days, or 20 percent less than its predecessor.

Rounding out the top five, The Purge: Anarchy grabbed $1.2 million yesterday as it slid 52 percent from last week. The thriller sequel has tallied $56.3 million so far, 2 ahead of the pace of its predecessor.

Thursday Morning Update: Guardians Of The Galaxy dropped a gear on Wednesday as it rose 86% to 55,467 tweets, up from 29,823 tweets on Tuesday. Its Facebook likes also had a solid increase, rising to 788,516 from 775,721 the previous day. Huge numbers all round here, especially for a new budding franchise. It has consistently blown all of my predictions from budding superhero franchises out of the water all week with really the only one which has consistently topped it being The Avengers. Virtually all Marvel superhero franchises began in the $50-60 million range with notable exceptions being Iron Man and Spider-Man which both had a $98 million and $114 million start many moons ago.  After those two the next biggest opening is way down at $65 million for Captain America and Thor three years ago. Thanks to its massive social media footprint and big increases I believe this has been performing big enough to buck that trend and start with a huge $75 million this weekend with very strong legs going into the rest of August. Marvel appears to have hit pay dirt here for yet another cash cow. 

Get On Up cooled a bit on Wednesday, rising 9% to 4,245 tweets, up from Tuesday's 3,908 tweets. Its Facebook likes also inched up to 258,396 from 256,723. By comparison, Jersey Boys had 2,074 tweets and 139,844 likes its Wednesday before release, and 42 had 4,273 tweets and 306,862 likes. Strong overall numbers, especially on Twitter, but the much lower like count and very tiny day to day increases on Facebook really set it apart from 42 in my mind and as such we are predicting $19 million for the film on the weekend. Still a very strong opening for the genre and with strong reviews rolling in for it, especially for Chadwick Boseman (even early Oscar buzz), this will also do well over the coming weeks. Looks like Summer is going out with a bang.

Universal's Lucy grossed $5.44 million on Tuesday to lead the daily box office for a fifth consecutive day. The modestly budgeted sci-fi action film starring Scarlett Johansson increased a respectable 10 percent over Monday's performance. In general, yesterday's daily percentage increases weren't as strong as usual for a Tuesday. Lucy surpassed the $50 million mark yesterday and has grossed a stronger than expected $54.31 million in five days. That places the film 22 percent ahead of the $44.51 million five-day take of 2010's Salt.

Hercules held steady in second place with $3.78 million. The Dwayne Johnson led 3D action-adventure film from Paramount and MGM was up 13 percent over Monday. Hercules continues to exceed its relatively modest pre-release expectations with a five-day start of $36.92 million. The film is currently running 5 percent behind the $38.97 million five-day take of 2012's Wrath of the Titans. With Disney's Guardians of the Galaxy arriving on Friday, it is especially important for Hercules to gross as much as it can this week.

Fox's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes took in $2.51 million to remain in third. The critically acclaimed 3D sci-fi action sequel was up 13 percent over Monday, but down 51 percent from last Tuesday. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has clearly taken a bit of a hit this week from the stronger than expected performances of Lucy and Hercules. With that said the film continues to exceed expectations with an impressive $177.17 million in 19 days.

Universal's The Purge: Anarchy claimed fourth with $1.658 million. The low budget horror sequel increased 9 percent over Monday and fell 54 percent from last Tuesday. The Purge: Anarchy continues to perform well (especially with its price-tag in mind) and has now grossed $55.04 million in twelve days. That places the film 1 percent ahead of the $54.32 million twelve-day take of last year's The Purge.

Planes: Fire and Rescue rounded out the day's unchanged top five with $1.645 million. The modestly budgeted computer animated sequel from Disney was up 10 percent over Monday and down just 29 percent from last Tuesday. With a twelve-day take of $38.49 million, Planes: Fire and Rescue is currently running 20 percent behind the $48.36 million twelve-day gross of last year's Planes.

LOS ANGELES - July 30, 2014 - According to Fandango, the nation's leading moviegoer destination, Marvel Studios' sci-fi action epic "Guardians of the Galaxy" is on track to take off this weekend, scoring 94 out of 100 points on the company's Fanticipation movie buzz indicator.

James Gunn's highly anticipated adventure is capturing 93% of this weekend's ticket sales on Fandango, and outselling previous Marvel franchise debuts, "Thor" and "Captain America," at the same point in the sales cycle. The film is poised to be the biggest August pre-seller in Fandango's history, far outpacing advance sales for the previous record-holder, Matt Damon's 2007 "The Bourne Ultimatum," and pacing to be this year's #1 non-sequel pre-seller, beating the previous record-holder, "The LEGO Movie."

Fandango has surveyed more than 1,000 "Guardians" ticket-buyers on its site and found that:
95% are attracted by the film's off-the-wall humor;

87% plan to attend the movie with a group of friends on opening weekend;

85% are looking forward to seeing Chris Pratt in his breakout role as Peter Quill ("Star-Lord");

80% are already interested in seeing additional "Guardians" movies;

73% claimed the movie's retro soundtrack made them more excited to see it;

67% picked Rocket Racoon (Bradley Cooper) as the otherworldly character they're most anticipating;

58% were previously unfamiliar with the "Guardians" comic books.

"In a year filled with sequels and remakes, ‘Guardians' feels fresher and more fun than any superhero movie so far this year," says Fandango Chief Correspondent Dave Karger. "Fans are craving the film's originality and that's translating to stellar advance ticket sales for a franchise first. Chris Pratt makes for a charmingly goofy and commanding hero in ‘Guardians,' and between this leading role and his voice work in ‘The LEGO Movie,' 2014 is shaping up to be Pratt's breakout year."
