Total tweets for March 12th Openers

Green Zone had a nice bump on Wednesday to 878 tweets, up from Tuesday's 568 tweets. By comparison, Surrogates had 742 tweets on its Wednesday before release, Law Abiding Citizen had 702 and Edge of Darkness had 1,291. This bump was good to see, especially on Wednesday when most movie skewing older tend to have weak percentage increases. With this in mind I think its Friday is going to come in at $6 million, which will lead to $17.5 million over the weekend.

Our Family Wedding increased to 643 tweets on Wednesday, up from Tuesday's 459 tweets. Another solid tally which puts it firmly ahead of most of the totals of the films I've been using as a benchmark: Did You Here About the Morgans? had 179 tweets its Wednesday before release, Leap Year had 344, When In Rome had 595. The big caveat here is its theater count which is estimated at 1,500. This figure has proven in the past to be inversely related to ratios, ie generally the lower the number of theaters the higher the ratio. Expect a ratio of ~800 and around $3 million on Friday and $8 million for the full weekend.

Remember Me sizzled yet again with an impressive 3,278 tweets on Wednesday, up from 2,214 tweets on Tuesday. The puts it in the top 10 of all films since last September in terms of buzz. The draw of Pattinson on Twitter is undeniable, but the ratio here is going to be tricky. Right now I'll stick with my estimate of 2,500 from yesterday and go ahead and predict a $5 million Friday and $12.5 million for the weekend. However, depends on how it explodes today (it's already at 850 tweets by 8:30AM) this number might definitely see a bump up by a few million.

Bringing up the rear, She's Out Of My League had 645 tweets on Wednesday, up from 571 tweets on Tuesday. A weak increase from Tuesday which is consistent with many romantic comedies and is a good sign for it having a typical 500-600 ratio. Given its trajectory towards a 2,400 tweet week I'd say a $3.75 million Friday and $10.5 million for the weekend are in order.

LOS ANGELES - Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon, the stars of Sex and the City 2, will receive The Ensemble Award, it was announced today by Robert Sunshine, managing director of the event, which will be held March 15-18, 2010, in Las Vegas. They will be presented with the ShoWest Ensemble Award at ShoWest's Final Night Banquet and Award Ceremony on Thursday, March 18, at Bally's and Paris Las Vegas.

"With the success of the first smash hit Sex and the City movie release, based on the hugely popular HBO series, the cast of Sex and the City 2 have already garnered commercial and critical success for their roles as four friends making their way through life and relationships in the big city," said Sunshine. "We could not be more thrilled to have the opportunity to honor Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon for their celebrated roles with The Ensemble Award."

Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures on May 27, 2010, Sex and the City 2 finds Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda taking another bite out of the Big Apple in the sequel to the 2008 summer blockbuster. The film also stars Chris Noth, David Eigenberg, Evan Handler, Jason Lewis, Mario Cantone and Willie Garson and was written and directed by Michael Patrick King. King is also producing with Parker, John Melfi and Darren Star.

Parker, who reprises the role of Carrie Bradshaw, won acclaim from critics and audiences around the world in HBO's much beloved television series "Sex and the City," for which she was awarded four Golden Globe Awards an Emmy Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actress, two SAG Awards as part of the Ensemble, and an Emmy Award as a producer on the series. Her recent credits include Failure to Launch, her Golden Globe-nominated performance in The Family Stone, State and Main, Ed Wood, The First Wives Club and Honeymoon In Vegas. Parker's early motion picture roles include Flight of the Navigator, Girls Just Want to Have Fun, L.A. Story and Footloose.

With an extensive acting career that spans film, stage and television, Emmy-nominated and Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award-winning actress Kim Cattrall will reprise her role as the femme fatale Samantha in Sex and the City 2. Cattrall can currently be seen in the political thriller The Ghost Writer, directed by Roman Polanski and also starring Pierce Brosnan and Ewan McGregor. Currently she can be seen in the UK, starring in "Private Lives," in the West End's Vaudeville Theater in London.

Golden Globe Award-winning and Emmy-nominated actress Kristin Davis will return to the silver screen as the ever-hopeful Charlotte in Sex and the City 2. Starring in film, television and on the stage, Davis was recently seen in the hit comedy Couples Retreat. In 2006, she made her London theatre debut, reprising her role as Sunny Jacobs in "The Exonerated." Prior to the series "Sex and the City," Davis starred on television as the devious Brooke Armstrong on "Melrose Place."

Emmy, Tony, Grammy and Golden Globe Award winner Cynthia Nixon will star as Miranda Hobbes in Sex and the City 2. Nixon's latest film credits include An Englishman in New York, Lymelife and The Babysitters. She was most recently seen onstage as Mama in the off-Broadway play "Distracted," earning a Drama League Award nomination. In 2006, she completed a successful run in "Rabbit Hole," for which she won the Tony Award for Best Actress. Her television credits include an Emmy Award-winning guest appearance on "Law & Order: SVU" and an Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated performance as Eleanor Roosevelt in the HBO telepic "Warm Springs."

Green Zone saw a slight bump on Tuesday to 568 tweets, up from Monday's 480 tweets. By comparison, Surrogates had 450 tweets on its Tuesday before release, Law Abiding Citizen had 697 and Edge of Darkness had 833. Pretty much right in line with the expectations I set forward yesterday which sets it at a $5 million or thereabouts Friday.

Our Family Wedding saw the biggest Tuesday jump as it rose 56% to 459 tweets, up from 293 tweets on Monday. Continuing with yesterday's comparisons: Did You Here About the Morgans? had 249 tweets its Tuesday before release, Leap Year had 317, When In Rome had 308. Huge jump from Monday to Tuesday is pretty atypical for the genre and was due in large part to its premiere being held last night. This generally skews ratios up pretty significantly so this could push it closer to 1,000 than 500. A $3 million Friday still looks good though.

Remember Me continued to impress with 2,214 tweets on Tuesday, up from Monday's 1,876 tweets. I had used Jennifer's Body as a comparison here due to its huge buzz related to Megan Fox, but as a commenter noted Pattinson is in a class of his own when it comes to Twitter following and should drive the ratio upwards of 2,000, maybe even to as high as 2,500.

Lastly, She's Out Of My League had 571 tweets on Tuesday, up from 390 tweets on Monday. A very solid outing here yet again especially in light of the numbers of recent romantic comedies (see the Our Family Wedding comparisons). When In Rome (272), and Leap Year (235). Double digits for the weekend appears to be locked.

Los Angeles - The Motion Picture Association of America, Inc. (MPAA) today released its annual Theatrical Market Statistics Report for 2009. The report shows that global box office receipts reached an all time high of $29.9 billion, an increase of 7.6% over 2008 and almost 30% from 2005. The U.S./Canada market reached $10.6 billion, an increase of more than 10%, and International receipts increased 6.3% to $19.3 billion in 2009. The 3D market gave the U.S./Canada box office a boost accounting for 11% of the total compared to just 2% in 2008. With 20 films released in 3D compared to just eight in 2008, higher value entertainment contributed significantly to box office revenues.

"While the motion picture industry continues to face tremendous challenges elsewhere in our business, we're reminded again this year that the cinema is the heart and soul of our industry and it is thriving," said Bob Pisano, President and Interim CEO of the MPAA.

Ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada rose more than 5.5% from 2008, the first admissions increase in two years. Per capita ticket purchases in the U.S. and Canada also increased 4.6% to 4.3 tickets per person, the first significant increase since 2002. Sales were fueled by repeated visits to the cinema by frequent moviegoers - those who go to the movies once a month or more and who make up only 10% of the population - who bought half of all tickets sold in 2009.

"Four straight years of box office growth- the last three each setting a new record - show the enormous appetite audiences continue to have for great and entertaining movies in the best way to enjoy them - on a big screen with a big crowd," said John Fithian, President and CEO of the National Association of Theatre Owners.

At the end of 2009 there were more than 16,000 digital cinema screens worldwide, up 86% from the end of 2008, a net gain of more than 7,000 screens. The fastest growing sector of digital screens is 3D. The number of digital 3D screens worldwide more than tripled in 2009, reaching 8,989, or about 6% of screens in the world.

"Digital technology is the foundation on which 3D has been built. Together, digital presentation and 3D hold the promise of a dramatic game change in moviemaking and movie-going. The global film audience is voting with its feet, and those feet are planted firmly in the direction of local cinemas that have the latest technology," said Pisano.

While box office revenues and admissions surged, films produced by U.S. production companies declined over the past three years. In 2009, the number of U.S. produced films released in domestic theaters decreased 12%, the first decline since 2003. The decline is attributable in significant part to labor issues affecting the industry in 2007-08, the recession and the challenges to investment recovery due to rampant content theft, and the decline in DVD sales.

While in the process of editing Inception, his new thriller that is set to open in July, Christopher Nolan certainly has superheros on his brain. The acclaimed director dropped a few hints about the third installment in his Batman series as well as what inspired him to help develop a Superman project.

"Without getting into specifics, the key thing that makes the third film an great possibility for us is that we want to finish our story," Nolan tells the LA Times. "And in viewing it as the finishing of a story rather than infinitely blowing up the balloon and expanding the story."

As for Superman: "[David Goyer, screenwriter on Batman Begins] basically told me, ‘I have this thought about how you would approach Superman,'" says Nolan. "I immediately got it, loved it and thought: That is a way of approaching the story I've never seen before that makes it incredibly exciting. I wanted to get Emma and I involved in shepherding the project right away and getting it to the studio and getting it going in an exciting way."
