Update: Sony reports that Heaven Is for Real bowed to a strong $3.7 million on Wednesday, claiming first place in the process. That figure tops the $3.64 million Friday debut of April 2011's Soul Surfer, a fellow faith-based film also distributed by Sony. With Easter weekend still ahead and a strong push for pre-sales among church crowds, Heaven is set to post a very healthy 5-day opening.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier grabbed another $3.52 million yesterday as it slipped into second place. That figure was down 25 percent from Tuesday and just 27 percent from Wednesday of last week. Through 13 days of release, Winter Soldier's $170.6 million domestic take is 12 percent ahead of Thor: The Dark World at the same point.
Rio 2 dropped 29 percent from Tuesday to add $3.03 million yesterday. The animated sequel's 6-day take is $49.3 million, or about 2 percent behind the pace of the 2011 original film.
Kevin Costner's Draft Day earned $0.83 million on Wednesday, off 34 percent from Tuesday. The sports drama's 6-day gross is $12.7 million, about 15 percent behind Costner's 3 Days to Kill.
Rounding out the top five, Oculus posted a 24 percent decline from Tuesday as it took in $0.87 million yesterday. The horror flick's 6-day tally is $14.97 million--3 percent ahead of House at the End of the Street.
Previously: Sony reports that Heaven Is For Real snagged $3.7 million yesterday, putting it in first place ahead of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Rio 2. The faith-based flick boasts an A+ CinemaScore from viewers under 35 and an A overall.

Thursday Morning Update: Heaven Is For Real surged to 18,291 tweets on its opening day Wednesday, more than a 120% bump from its 8,249 tweets on Tuesday. By comparison, Son Of God had 14,135 tweets its day of release (a 117% increase from the day before) while Noah had 44,325 (128% bump). The average on the year for all films is under 90%. This has done really well this week with strong expansion throughout, and with the Easter weekend ahead it should continue to excel, especially with faith-based audiences. Look for it to hit an impressive $25 million by the end of the weekend, making for three overtly religious themed movies in the top 10. Year of God at the box office continues.
A Haunted House 2 continued to have difficulty with generating buzz on Wednesday as it fell 22% to 3,496 tweets, down from 4,488 tweets on Tuesday. A Haunted House curiously fell an identical 22% on its Wednesday before release to 8,528 tweets. So the explosion I was looking for just never came and it appears to be destined to never make it out of the box office shadow of the first film. We are predicting $13.5 million for it by Sunday.
Transcendence had a 120% bump on Wednesday to 4,252 tweets, up from 1,936 tweets on Tuesday and landing it in the top 10 for the first time since its last trailer release months ago. By comparison, Oblivion had 3,797 tweets its Wednesday before release and Elysium had 3,862. After a very slow start to the week it has picked up a lot of steam headed into the weekend and should translate that into a solid $18.5 million opening and top spot amongst the new openers.
Bears saw a similarly hefty 101% increase to 1,083 tweets on Wednesday, up from 538 tweets on Tuesday. By comparison, Oceans had 774 tweets its Wednesday before release, African Cats had 2,312 and Chimpanzee had 1,381. This is stacking up well with other Disneynature films and with no massive raises in buzz I see no indication that it would exceed $6 million.

Captain America: The Winter Solider took in $4.73 million on Tuesday to continue to lead the daily box office. The blockbuster 3D superhero sequel from Disney and Marvel was up 36 percent over Monday and down a healthy 32 percent from last Tuesday. Midweek grosses continued to be stronger than usual in general on Tuesday due in part to Holy Week. Captain America: The Winter Soldier has grossed a strong $167.07 million through twelve days. That places the film 11 percent ahead of the $150.04 million twelve-day take of last year's Thor: The Dark World.
Fox's Rio 2 held steady in second place with $4.26 million. The 3D computer animated sequel from Blue Sky Studios was up a terrific 60 percent over Monday's performance, as family films held up especially well on Tuesday. Rio 2 has grossed $46.26 million through five days of release. That is in line with pre-release expectations and places the film a slim 1 percent behind the $46.68 million five-day start of 2011's Rio (which increased 28 percent on its first Tuesday to gross $4.18 million).
Draft Day was up 43 percent and one spot from Monday to claim third on Tuesday with $1.25 million. Lionsgate's modestly budgeted sports drama starring Kevin Costner has grossed $11.91 million in five days. That is a bit below expectations, but the film will hope to build upon Tuesday's strong hold going forward. Draft Day is currently running 16 percent behind the $14.21 million five-day take of recent Costner vehicle 3 Days to Kill.
Oculus was up 21 percent, but still down one spot from Tuesday to place in fourth with $1.15 million. The low-budget R-rated horror film from Relativity has grossed a solid $14.099 million in its first five days of release. Oculus continues to perform very similar to Relativity's House at the End of the Street, which grossed $13.84 million in its first five days of release back in September of 2012.
Paramount's Noah rounded out the day's top five with $1.04 million. The Darren Aronofsky directed biblical epic starring Russell Crowe was up 47 percent over Monday and down 37 percent from last Tuesday. Noah has grossed $86.73 million in 19 days, which leaves it $13.27 million away from reaching the $100 million domestic milestone.
Divergent followed closely behind in sixth with $1.01 million. Lionsgate's successful young adult adaptation starring Shailene Woodley was up 50 percent from Monday down only 2 percent from last Tuesday. The 26-day total for Divergent stands at $126.43 million.
